Currently running the sound from phono sockets on the TV to an auxliary input on the Pre Amp - works fine.

Now upgrading the TV, (bigger, better etc) but it does not have phono output for sound, only the 3mm headphone sockets or the optical sound output socket.

The question - is the sound quality from the headphone socket to the hifi system using cable adequate or does using a DAC to take the optical output to the Hifi system make a significant improvement -
Please could you suggest which DACs to consider using - the price range is quite varies from just a few pounds to just a few thousand pounds.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Try the Headphone Out - they can be pretty noisy so you may end up wanting to go down the DAC route.

Unless the rest of the kit costs £££ I doubt you need to overspend on a suitable DAC - £50 is likely about it for most folk, after that you would have to look at the Source content and decide if the TV is the best option or an add on device (which includes 2RCA Out).

Thanks - the TV cost is only a few percent of the total system cost so it looks as if it will be worth spending a bit on a DAC.
