Headphone problem

Hi, Recently I purchased a set of headphones for my laptop computer, connected both cables to the laptop, worked very well, superb Stereo, so I thought they could work with my Sony Bravia TV, so I purchased an extension cable from TV to my headphones with 3.5 jack plug inserted into TV with two black rings on it (Stereo) I connected the other end with cable from my headphones, it worked but I don't have any Stereo transmission only Mono, only one cable I could connect.
I would appreciate any ideas to solve this problem, awaiting any response or suggestions.

Do these headphones have a standard 3.5mm minijack?
An obvious question but do the headphones work when plugged into the Tv?
If yes, it can only be the extension lead that is faulty or the wrong type.

Hi, yes I have attempted to use my Headphone cable directly into the TV headphone socket & I only receive Mono transmission. I have now handed over the problem to Sony, have informed there is a possibility that a faulty problem with the headphone socket within the TV, the set is still under guarantee. I had problems previously with a different Headphones , the sound would switch off at periodical intervals. It will be worth while to check the inner parts within the TV.
