    Hi,

I was looking at some games this weekend for the Xbox and to my pleasant surprise I noted that quite a few stated HDTV support and Splinter Cell even stated HDTV 480p support. So I rented this game from Blockbuster, went to game and bought the £24.99 HDTV kit to connect to my Sanyo PLV-30 projector...

Excited about the prospect of not having to chip my Xbox I couldn't wait to load it up....When into the PAL-60 menu, set support for 480p to yes and there we go....

Well dissappointment was there big time, the picture was still full of jaggies nothing of the smoothness I came to expect from upgrading to progressive scan DVD.

Then I tried my projector settings, 480p, 480i, 575p, 575i all worked, albeit the 480 picture was a bit lower than the 575. But I couldn't see a single bit of difference between interlaced or not.

I guess those games are not breaking trade description standards as those are all valid HDTV resolutions. Was I supposed to see a difference and reduction in jaggies?

Does it make a big difference when using US games in 480p, are the jaggies gone?

    Cheers,

    Jean-Paul

I don't think there's a 'x' in the line for 480P support in the Splinter Cell features table.

There's an 'x' for DolbyD, Online downloads and one other feature iirc.

There is bug in the PAL XBox BIOS that allows access to
those settings, they do nothing. You can't get anything other than a 480i picture from a UK box. If you upgrade to Live or buy a new XBox you don't see the settings just the usual PAL60.
Your options are modchip or buy a US console.

    Regards,
    Neil.

    ?
Look at the packaging of the PAL Splinter Cell.
On the back, near the bottom, there's a 2x3 table (could be 2x4).
It lists several features. e.g. Dolby Surround, # of Players, XBL content, 480P, etc.

If there's an 'x' next to the fearture Splinter Cell has it!
    There ain't an 'x' by 480P.

I assume* there's an 'x' next to the NTSC version.

    * = dangerous, I know :blush:

Even if it had it - you wouldn't get that picture! Its a bug in the BIOS, Microsoft have noted it!

Thanks for the responses. I can't believe I have been that blind that I didn't notice an X (well it wasn't there ofcourse :clown: ). I must have been so excited that my brain placed it there....

So stating HDTV on the box is ok but that means in PAL just interlaced.....

Any good sources for buying US media? Considering a lot of games have come down to the £20-£25 level in the UK...

    Cheers,

    Jean-Paul

Ignore those boxes, every game except Jame Bond: Agent under fire has 480p support.

I agree buy the originals to ensure ongoing support...

So can you play UK discs, using the NTSC settings in progressive scan? Or was I reading too much inbetween the lines?

    Cheers,

A PAL Xbox unmodified will never show anything other than a 480i picture, even though the options say it will do otherwise.

If you install a modchip and use the video region select disc a PAL xbox will display the modes that a US Xbox can with NTSC and some PAL titles [not all!] ALl NTSC titles except for James Bond Agent under fire support atleast 480p, even though they don't say so on the box. Some PAL titles have the support and will work if the mode is in US mode and you boot a PAL disc, this doesn't always work, and in some cases it screws the game timing up.

I say again though, the best option for HiDef gaming is to get US consoles. Nearly all new US titles for the PS-2 now are 480p enabled.

    Regards,
    Neil.
