    setup

    eytv 300 DVB > Firewire > G5 or G4 > 1,2 GHz (HDTV) G4> TV

install software- station scanning - take remote control -
switch to euro 1080 - bingo

    some small additional benefits :

fully digital - no A/D conversion with TFTs - time shifting- HD recording-
programming vs. web - automatic conversion from TS stream to QTime
MPEG cut with preview pics- seemless integration with Toast - 5 mouseclicks > DVD

    300 Euros here in Germany

by the makers of Toast and the former Astarte guys

    Jon,

The small flaw in your plans is the Mac Sat receiver is Free To Air only and does not have a CI slot so you can't view Euro1080 as it is now encrypted.

mine, does that mean a 1.2GHz G4 (such as the one in the Mac Mini) can decode 1080i MPEG-2 files real-time? There was a review on a website (I think it was Anandtech) that said the Mac Mini could not decode MPEG-2 TS files higher than about 13MBps bit-rate. They were using VideoLAN client as the decoder though.

    yes..
a mini mac with the eyetv player is able to decode 25 fr. of a18 Mbit
1080i ts stream- this is rather a sensation..

    This is why...:
the main problems here is that apple actually doesn`t allow access to the hardware acceleration of the graphic card (access is limited to apples own dvd player ).
so this has to be done in software alone , assisted by the quartz engine .

vlc and the QTplayer have more overhead than the rather optimized eyetvplayer.

    ....b.t.w made by dr.markus fest ( toast - astarte a.o.)

on the PC side , you need a 2,8 GHz P4 or a similar AMD cpu to decode a 18 MBit HDTV stream
    without DXVA acc.

    regards from black forest germany

so will the h.264 QT codec in OSX 'Tiger' help it perform a native HD decode more efficiently than that ?

    hi jont

for sure ... but like often better decoding .. better hardware

same on the wintel platform - if you use the wmv 9 hd codec the hardware requirements for 1080 p are > .... 3 GHz CPU

the G 5 does (per se ) a fantastic job with encoding and decoding tasks ...

as there is a similar architecture (compared to a minimac) its possible , but as long as apple hesitates to improve accesss to the hardware acceleration of the nVidia and ati graphic chips for third party softwareplayer developers you pretty much need a perfect configurated device.

but....cupertino finally knows that there are strange things like htpcs and so there is hope on the horizon..... :)

@ Cebit 2005 german telekom for the first time showcased their own little htpc..

    30 apple G5 2,5 and 90 50 " Plamas ..... an impressive videowall

    regards
