Does anyone know of a site where I can download HDTV sample videos?

And what software would I need to play them on a PC?

You can try Apples website, they have 720p and 1080p videos available for download. You only need the latest version of Apple quicktime player to play it. Which is free , but costs money for full functionality. I got the full version for free, but I don't think I am allowed to tell you how I did it. Basically with the full version you can watch HD videos in full screen. With the free version you have to watch it in their border. It's still HD but the border can be annoying.

Apple also has something called itunes. If you goto US Itunes you can download for a fee episodes of HDtv shows like Lost.

They have loads of videos. Just look on that page for the links. Look at their HD gallery and movies trailer section. They have loads of sample videos.
Microsoft also have a HD page. They are absolutely free, but are not H.264 like Apples stuff. They are arguably lower quality. They are for use with a standard Window media Player 10.

There is also the DivX player. They have their own HD standard, and they must be played on their latest DivX player . Which is available at their site for free .

    DivX
    Player link

    DivX Video link
    http://stage6.divx.com/list_channels

The DivX site has Hd vids hidden , but they are some there. You just have to look.

    Hope this helps.

There is also another way to get HD vids. You can actually get whole HDtv episodes. I am enjoying HD Smallville and Sopranos right now. There are more as well. To find them you will have to search the dingy underbelly of the web. They are well hidden. Unfortunately I can't give you a link. Have a snoop and you may just find p2p.

Usenet is where you can find HDTV uploads, you just need a client to download all the postings that make up the complete file.

    Have a look at www.newzbin.com

One good povider of access to news servers is newshosting.com

Any idea what the bitrate and/or resolution are? This was always one of my pet peeves with legit tv downloads - the "dodgy" stuff was always a far higher bitrate and thus quality.
