I have posted this to the HDTV Forum but its a very quiet forum, so here goes a crosspost :

    DIVX HD on Pio 434?

I see that there is a High Def version of DIVX that apparently plays on a modded XBOX using XMBC.

I am going to dowload the avi's from the site and try this out on my Pioneer 434 Plasma tonight (I have it set to NTSC and have the Hi-Def component kit).

    http://www.divx.com/hd/

    Downloaded Madagascar, burnt to a DVD+RW as a DVD-ROM(ISO).

I have installed the Slayers EVOX v2.6 on my chipped XBOX, which includes the Enigmah application, XBMC, XBMP, etc. My XBOX is connected to INPUT3 of the Pioneer 434's Media Receiver box via a MADCOW Hi-Def kit and component leads.

Set XBOX to NTSC using the Enigmah Video switcher.
    Set 480p, 720p, 1080i to YES on the MS-Dash.
Started XBMC, ensured that it upsamples to GUI resolution.

I double click on madagascar.avi and up it comes in all it's glory. Great picture quality and smashing DD5.1 sound. Pioneer reports that its being fed 525p, which surprised me, I was expecting the resolution to be higher.

Now downloading the other clips and going to reburn the DVD+RW to see if any of them have higher resolutions.

Possibly I have not setup XBMC right, or the version in Slayers 2.6 is too old for upsampling to 720p.

p.s. Also tried this disc on my WH Smiths Skyworth DVD/DIVX player. It played the sound OK but the picture just stayed at the directory structure of the disc.

OK, downloaded all 5 of the clips, unrarred them and burnt them to the DVD+RW.

All played at 480p (PIO reports 525P)

Then, unchecked the box on XBMC->Settings->My Videos which said "scale to GUI resolution"

Tried again and all of the clips play at 720p (PIO reports 750P)

The Madcow is crap though and shows reflections of text. Can't wait on DVDBOXOFFICE eventually despatching the Official MS HiDef Kit!!

That's bloody useful. Thanks for the little guide. I have a 435XDE and chipped X-Box...looking forward to trying it.

What sort of things are available in HD DivX?

No idea! Not much on EDonkey anyway.

Getting 720p on my Pio gave me a buzz anyway and looking forward to much more in the coming years!

You mean that the normal upscaled dvds look much better than playing them with a normal dvd player?
Coz if they do, I m not going to buy the pio 575 dvd player.
I ll buy an XBOX ;)

As i do not own this player i would not know if it is any better than the xbox solution. But for what its worth i own a sigmatek 400 pro divx/dvd player which i think is a great player, plays all ive thrown at it also is compatable with sacd and audio dvd,but time after time i go back to the modded xbox.

I can use this as a media centre for all my movies, and mp3s ripped to the hard drive with the bonus of playing the odd game or two,so ask yourself standalone player or full blown media centre without the hassle or cost of a htpc. For the money and flexibility the xbox offers alot for little effort.

If you want to know more pm me and i can answer any questions you may have.

    cheers

also been at this for a few weeks myself, upscaled DVD's look pretty soft IMO and sometimes flicker [pal stuff] as the 435 prefers 50hz to 60hz, but so much easier burning half a dozen avi or divx files to a dvd-r and watching on the plasma via xbox, rather than re-authoring them etc.

also makes a huge difference if you select 1:1 pixel mapping from xbmc

although the upscaling is an intersting diversion, the pic from my HDMI Arcam is reassuringly significantly better
