Yes. I tried an Oppo 971 with a BenQ PE7700 last week and there was a big difference between component and HDMI. On component the picture whilst still very good was much flatter; with the digital input - upscaling in the Oppo to 720P - the difference was simply enormous. It had much more bite, it seemed more realistic but the biggest gain was in it's sense of depth. It was much more three dimensional to a degree that REALLY impressed me.

However this does not necessarily apply to other projector/DVD player combinations. They may or may not work in the same way. My demo was at BenQ's offices and one of their engineers commented that the Oppo produced the best picture that he'd ever seen on the 7700. The two do seem to be a very happy combination.
