Hello all,

I have the following setup at my home.
  • PS3 (HD Source)
    • This can output 3D Video and HD Audio (7.1, Dolby True HD, DTS, True HD, etc)
    • It also has a SPDIF optical out for that supports only till DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1
  • Bravia 3D LED TV
    • This can display 3D Video content but cannot accept HD audio formats
  • Onkyo AVR TX-SR605
    • Supports HD Audio
    • Does not support 3D Video pass through

I have already tried the below combinations
  • If I connect the PS3 to the AVR and then to the TV, I can listen to HD Audio but not play 3D video.
  • If I connect PS3 directly to the TV, I can watch 3D Video. I also connect the SPDIF optical out from PS3 to AVR so that I can listen at least 5.1 audio.
I want to have a HDMI splitter device that can integrate the existing setup such that I can view 3D video and listen to HD audio at the same time. I am not looking for connecting 2 display devices...

Can anyone please suggest if such a splitter exists?

I saw one online that supports HDMI v1.4a, but I am not sure if this will do the job for me!

Most HDMI splitter should be able to do that but as with all things HDMI the best way is to buy from somewhere that has a good returns policy as the only way you will know for sure is by trying it.

PS3 - HDMI Splitter --- AVR
---- TV

Thanks for the response Sebastian!

My problem is that my devices are in India and I am currently in Germany and planning to buy the splitter here, so trying it out is not an option for me currently. :(

Have you or anyone really tried such a combination?

You require a fairly specialist/expensive device - some folk prefer to install a stand alone Dual HDMI Out BD Player instead.

The device you ask about has to have the ability to replace the 3D video on one of its Outputs with a 'dummy' 2D signal to allow the non-3D AVR to lock to the signal and decode the HD Audio.

Another option is to replace the AVR.

Hi Joe,

Any cheap splitter will work just fine. He doesn't need to create a dummy 2D signal as the amp will decode the audio just fine as he mentioned in his original post. I had the same problem before upgrading myself and a £3 splitter from Amazon did the job just fine.

Hopefully you are correct - any time we get a call on this the AVR throws a wobble when it sees the EDID from the 3D Source.

I guess it being a PS3 may be the difference.

Thanks for the response Joe!

Do you know of any device that can force 3D video on one output and send HD audio with dummy 2D signal on the other output?

Atlona had a box and possibly HDFury had one also.

Will need to dig around for product codes - the Atlona was discontinued a while back.

I was also looking at alternatives...

1. Replace the AVR with a new one
--> This looks like a very expensive option. I need to sell my old AVR and then buy a new one...
--> An ultimate solution (may cost me more than € 250)
--> More HDMI inputs, etc...
2. Buy a new BD player with 2 HDMI outputs (one with 3D and 4K support and the other one for just HD Audio) Although I dont have a 4K TV now! ;)
--> I checked for one from Samsung and it looks like a good one. (€ 170)
Samsung BD-J7500 3D Blu-ray Player (Ultra HD Upscaling, WLAN, Smart TV, HDMI, USB) schwarz: Samsung: Amazon.de: Heimkino, TV & Video
--> I guess I may not have any other 3D source other than this one.
--> In this setup, I may still need to get a HDMI switch because my AVR (Onkyo 605) has only 2 HDMI inputs. All other HDMI inputs can go here!
--> Limitation will be if I connect my PS3 directly to TV for 3D Games and have 5.1 audio via Optical. If I really need HD audio for games, I will have to compromise on 3D video!

I think, its better to get this BD player than spending so much on experiments (luck) on splitters.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ardilo
