I have a hdmi extender at the moment which takes 2 wires but its a bit messy and im thinking of how to set it up long term. i see there are now HDMI extenders which take a single cat5 cable. Does anyone know if these will work with a mains plug in network extender?

If you mean over HomePlug the answer is no.

There are HDMI over Powerline extenders - just remember they have to compress the HDMI signal so are best avoided unless you have no option to run a cable.
