HDMI connection to amps

If the telly is connected Thru' an amp do you always have to have the amp turned on?

That depends on the amp - some do some don't - check the manual.

Which recievers are you looking at? You need to ask about HDMI passthrough. Some will only passthrough the last source selected which can be annoying. However, I use my reciever for all my viewing due to the improved sound quality and clarity. I just can not stand thelow quality of the TV speakers. Also due to the improved sound I can listen to the TV at a quieter volume in the evening than I would be able to with the TV speakers. Hence the reciever is better for this too. I have also bought an all in one remote (Harmony) which makes the operation of all the equipment very easy. You are spending a fair bit of money on you reciever and speakers so may as well use them as much as you can.
