    First the good news. :)

I finally got an answer from Molex on the HDMI cable availability.
They are using 2 companies in the UK for distribution.
One of those companies does not yet recognise the Molex part number so can't help.
The other company does recoginise it as a 2mtr HDMI-HDMI cable.
Price for 1 is around £7.50

    Now the bad news. :(

The anticipated delivery date for the first consignment is "end of December" and they're only expecting a very small number of cables.
Minimum order is £10 so if anyone else is interested, I'll put together a bulk order and save us all a few pounds.

So we won't be watching anything via HDMI until 2004 then probably.. great.
Still they are much cheaper than i expected.
I'd certainly be interested as it doesn't look like my 868 is going to come with one.

Yep - it's really going to screw up my plans as I was only going to connect the DVD to the media receiver via HDMI.
With no cable available that means I will have to purchase a (component) cable in the meantime.
No wait, I can't as my component inputs are used by my PS2.

Yup.. that puts me in exactly the same position as you.. although i do actually have a component cable already, but as i was going to connect the ps2 via the ixos component cable, it either means getting another component cable so i can use the amp for component switching in the mean time, or switching the cables whenever i want to play ps2 or watch a dvd... hmm.

I'm going to keep a running total to keep tabs:
    So far there's:

    2m Cables
    Me x 1
    Beekeeper x 2
    Arsenal x 1
    Edgeyboy x 1
    Costas x 1
    reedp54 x 1

    3m Cables
    Robertt x 1
    Beekeeper x 2
    mrpap x 1

Add to the thread if you want to be included in the group buy.
I plan to place the order next week or as soon as I have confirmation there is no HDMI cable included with the 868 DVD.

I got this reply from Pioneer UK today:

    Response (JDLCS) - 04/11/2003 06:08 PM
    Hi,

    Thanks for your email.

Regretfully, neither the 504HDE or 868i will be supplied with HDMI cables. At present we are looking into this situation, but have no definite answer at present.

    Regards.
    Customer Relations.

So no HDMI cables on either its definite, not that suprising really, since when has any DVD or Display come with the best quality interconnect for free, I certainly didn't receive a set of component cables with my Denon 2800MKII???

    Beekeeper,

Panasonic in the US have a DVI-HDMI cable part number TY-SCH03DH - not sure of the length, though. Hope this helps.

Spoke to the pioneer people at the Scottish Home cinema show at the weekend. They only have 2 HDMI cables in the country at present which were shipped from Japan. They didn't think the 868 or 504/434 will ship with a HDMI cable. Also said that QED would be doing a HDMI cable soon but no date given. Had the 434 plasma running with the 868 and the picture was excellent.

The whole situation with the HDMI cable is farcical.
Deliveries of the 868 are imminent and yet we won't be able to utilise this supposedly fantastic new digital interface which Pioneer is, well, pioneering....

Molex have authorised 2 distributors to sell the HDMI cable here in the UK and both have placed orders with Molex but don't expect any stock until "end of December".
what the fudge? It's only a bundle of wires with a connector on each end!
It must take all of 10 minutes to make one and the intiial price tag of about £7.50 indicates that the materials are pretty basic and the man-hours required are minimal.

In the future, there are rumours that QED will be the sole manufacturers of this cable and presumably the distribution network will be larger as QED currently supply cables to a large number of dealers.
I wonder how this will fit in with Molex who are uniquely involved with HDMI.org?

In the meantime, I will continue pursuing this "bulk buy" purchase until something changes.

Well I'll be getting my Sanyo Z2 shortly and am getting it professionally installed with wires hidden etc, I'll need a HDMI cable running to the projector but it looks like that won't be possible and I sure as hell aren't waiting for the cable to become available before installing the projector! Looks like HDMI is a non starter for me then. Or can I run a DVI cable and use an adaptor at the DVD player end of the DVI cable?

    Cheers,
    Andy.

    Hi Brogan

Any chance of ordering a 3 metre HDMI-HDMI. The Molex part number is 59205-6203. If not then put me down for one 2 metre lead. Ill just have to move the plasma nearer

    zAndy1,

Have you sold your Momitsu and planning to get the 868AVi? The Momitsu would be fine with a DVI-D cable to the Z2, but the 868 would need a display that is HDCP compatible, which I don't believe the DVI-I socket on the Z2 is. Hope this helps.

The Z2 is HDCP compatible. Yes I've sold the momitsu (should have kept it really!). I'm in two minds whether to go for something like the 868avi or use my PC with the Z2 , I'll probably go for the latter option as I've already got it and can use a DVI cable. If only I could make it user friendly....

    Cheers,
    Andy

    Brogan,

Have just bought the pioneer 434 and plan to use the 868i, but like you have found it does not come with the cable:(.

Could you put me down for a 2m HDMI - HDMI cable as well.

    Cheers

There is still some rumour/speculation that the 868 may be bundled with the HDMI cable.
Apparently Pioneer have 200 units sitting in the warehouse but they are delaying distribution for some unknown reason.
It could be to do with the cable or it could be to do with the missing pages for HDMI from the manual.

As the cables won't be available until "end of December" anyway, I will put off placing the order until we have more definite information.

In the meantime, if anyone else wants to be included in the potential group buy, add your name to the thread.

P.S. The good news is my AX5i and 504HDE *should* be arriving at the dealer today and with me Monday :D

Alwyn, no news yesterday so I have to assume it wasn't delivered.
I never expected it to be but as my dealer was adamant that I would have it "by the end of the week", I'm going to give him a hard time over it.
I know and he knows that these units are not going to be available for another week or two so why bother bull****ting?!
I'm not annoyed that I didn't get my plasma but that my dealer felt that he had to lie to me.
    Muppet!
I'll give him a call on Monday to check his story.
No doubt it'll be something to do with Pioneer delaying the shipment, etc., etc.
