Am I going mad, or just doing something stupid? I'm sure when we set up our first PS3 that we could simultaneously have HDMI audio (to a Toshiba 42WLT66) and Optical (To a Sony surround system).

But no matter how we try, we can't get this to work on a replacement PS3 we've just received. It's either one or the other.

If we go to audio settings and automatically configure HDMI it works, but we get no surround sound. If we configure the optical out for bitstream 5.1 DD it works but we lose the HDMI sound.

If we try to manually configure both (2ch PCM to the TV and 5.1 to the optical) only the optical works.

Really don't want to have to put the surround system on all the time.

New PS3 is 1.93 if that is of any relevance.

Any help with proper settings welcome.

    regards

    Brian

Having audio active on both the HDMI and the optical is not possible on the PS3. Some people have claimed that it has worked for them for a limited time by accident but can't explain how it happened. Technically it is not possible to set it that way. Hopefully it's something that will be addressed in a future firmware update. The 360 can do it already so there is no reason why the PS3 shouldn't be able to.

No, just one or the other. Bit of a pain TBH but will hopefully be sorted out with a future update.

    Hi Guys

I have recently set up my PS3 in a similar mannor; optical output leading to amp and HDMI cable leading to TV.

So does this mean that I cant get Dolby 5.1 whilst using HDTV and vice versa?

That just doesnt seem right considering how much we pay for this stuff!

    Any advice?

Afraid so! Only hope is if Sony include a fix for 5.1 over optical in a later update.

Can you not put the video through your amp over HDMI and out to the TV?

I think you may have misunderstood the discussion of this thread. You can get 5.1 from a digital optical cable whilst using the HDMI for video. What you can't have is have an active sound output through your TV using the HDMI at the same time as an active sound output thtough your amp using the optical cable.

On Wednesday my PS3 out put both Optical (via AMP) and HDMI (via TV), then yesterday when I switched it on it did amp only, then switched it off and back on again it did Optical (via AMP) and HDMI (via TV) again

As default it is set to output via optical.

    Thanks Moogle and Cluelessjock.

So Moogle, how is it possible to get both the 5.1 using th optical cable and the video using the HDMI cable?

Cluelessjock, I dont think there is a HDMI input/output in the amp so your suggestion would not be viable for me.

that sucks though because i was really looking forward to the whole shabang!

Just to elaborate on my question Moogle,

How do i deactivate the sound ouput from ps3 to the TV through the HDMI in order to benefit from both 5.1 sound and HD video quality?

You just have to go into the PS3's sound settings and choose optical as the sound output option. Make sure you check both the DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 options. On the PS3 the video and sound outputs are independent of each other and individually set.
