My current dvd player is coaxial digital only and I am looking to buy a new dvd player and amp. I know that i-link is already about and HDMI 2 is on the horizon, but...

    1. Is HDMI 2 going to give noticeably better sound quality than i-link ?
    2. Does i-link give notioceably better sound quality than a coaxial digital cable / 6 phono?

In both cases my interest is in dd/ dts/ dvd-a/ sacd sound - stereo still goes through a dedicated hi-fi amp.

    Thanks

Don't know about HDMI2 but iLINK is supposed to be superior (to other digital interfaces) due to it being jitter-free.
Personally I can't hear any difference between co-axial, optical, iLINK or phono on my system.

The big advantage of iLINK however is that you only need 1 very small cable for SACD, as opposed to 3 pairs of phonos.

I use it mainly becuase I like the pretty blue light...

To answer the second question (kindof), this will depend entirely on the player and a general answer just should not be given. I suspect however the answer will be that the ilink will be better since its presence will inspire designers to cut back on the analogue costs in the belief that the ilink will be the most commonly utilised interface
