Hi has anyone got any experience of using online retailer HDEWCameras in surrey.
First class outfit. Lots of positive feedback on TP.
Look to be pretty well recommended ove on TP
HDEW Cameras, yes another one. - Talk Photography
After the huge price hike at Panamoz I think my next lens purchase will be from HDEW, hopefully this week.
I've read the long thread on TP but noticed a few of the glowing reports are from people that have only made that one post. Call me paranoid but I'm inclined to ignore those, I can't believe someone would join just to make one post about one company unless there was another motive.
Anyway, I do feel they are a good alternative to the more known grey importers like DigitalRev and One-stopdigital.
Can't fault them, bought a Canon 7D, ordered on a Sunday, delivered on Tuesday
Pity they don't seem to do Sony gear.... ?
That's because they only sell proper cameras
...my money was on 7 minutes before the first Divvie would bite - Eddie - was it you who had 5 minutes ?
"Gullible" is my middle name
...more flattering than I had in mind....
Cannot fault them. I recently bought a 6D from them and then changed my mind and bought the 6D and 24-105 kit. They could not have been nicer. I was kept informed throughout the process.
I would definitely buy from them again.
Looking at getting a 7D, used on ebay with no warranty are going for around £650+ or HDEW are offering body only for £719 with their warranty bit of a no brainer or with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens for £779, is the lens worth £60.
Yeah if you don't have something in that range. It is not that bad a lens and you could probably sell it for about that if you don't like it. I suspect though you will outgrow it fairly quickly.
You can easily find out what that lens sells for brand new, then see what they go for secondhand. I brought one recently to sit on my 60D for £50, although it wasn't the MKII version and was not brand new.
Is their stock all imported stuff?
Panamoz seem to have stopped replying to any mails currently... wonder if they've been caught doing something they shouldn't have with regards to VAT / import duty...
Yes, or at least the bigger stuff is. Im not sure about the smaller accessories as they seem quite expensive.
I'm considering a Canon 7D body @ £699 and emailed HDEW as I've read so many good reports about them. Got the prompt reply below.
I'm not only concerned about the risks regarding items shipped from abroad, but have a moral issue with any sort of tax avoidance..... but for HDEW it seems VAT is paid and items are shipped from their office in Surrey.
I will have to get my skates on since offer is only extended until today . If anyone sees anything in their response below that I should be concerned about, please shout!
We do import our stock from outside of the UK, however all of the products we sell are UK specification (UK plugs and instructions).
You will get a three year warranty which covers you for mechanical faults, breakdown, parts and labour and this will be repaired in the UK through a Canon approved repair centre. The first year of the warranty will be with canon and the next two years will be with us as your retailer.
Therefore it is not a 'Grey Import' as it comes with a warranty valid in the UK and is sold to UK specification.
The camera will be sent from our office here in Surrey.
The price on our website does include VAT, so that is the final price you will pay. We can provide you with a vat receipt if you request one when ordering.
Yes you are welcome to come and collect from our office here in Surrey, however you would have to make an order with us first over the phone so we can make sure we have your items in stock and take a £100 deposit, if not then we will order them in and let you know when they are available for collection, this usually takes 3-4 working days.
Please call us on 0208 669 5668 10am - 5pm (or 10am - 3pm on sat) if you are interested, or if you would like any more information.

Subject: Enquiry on EOS 7D - please reply quickly as offer ends Monday
Im looking to buy a Canon EOS 7D body and was thinking about buying a used body from MPB for just under £700. But Id rather buy a new body from you for £699 with a 3 year warranty!
I accept you sell imported cameras and dont have a problem with this but I hope you dont mind if I ask a few questions before purchase.
1. Is the camera full UK spec with UK plug and English instruction manual? (And all accessories!)
2. Is the camera already physically in the UK and shipped from your address in Surrey?
3. Have all UK VAT and import duties been paid?
4. Will Canon UK honour the first years warranty? Does it come with a European Warranty Card?
5. Will you provide a UK sales receipt and VAT receipt?
6. What are the arrangements for under warranty repairs in (i) the first year and (ii) years 2 & 3?
7. What are the arrangements for out of warranty repairs? Will Canon UK happily repair imported goods?
8. If I was in the area could I pick the item up from you myself?
Sorry for all the questions but £699 is still a shed load of money for me and I want to spend it wisely!
Ive read good reports about you and hope for a positive response J
Could I ask you to respond asap since Im not going to spend more than £699 and would have to order from you tomorrow as your offer is due to expire thereafter?
Thank you !

Two things spring to mind.
At the price they are selling them for I'm not convinced VAT etc have been paid. The difference between their price and UK price seems to be about the same as the VAT.
The second is that they state you can't use the Canon cash back offer. That means they are not full UK products. This might not be an issue but they are definitely grey market.
I wouldn't have any issues buying from them, in fact I tried but couldn't get them to deliver to my work address, and I understand the customer is buying from a UK based company, so duty etc is not our responsibility anyway, but I'd be surprised if they do come in to the country the 100% legal way.
Just my thoughts though.
Thanks for the reply Dave. I don't have a problem with a so-called grey import since this is not illegal (so long as VAT etc is paid). And the reviews of HDEW are very good. I guess what I'm asking is, have I done everything I can to make sure I'm paying all of the relevant taxes and duties? If I get a VAT invoice from HDEW does this prove to anyone who may be interested that I have done my duty and paid my VAT?
There is a scan posted here of someone's actual VAT invoice from hdew.
As far as I can see buying from them is all above board. Unlike with the other suppliers that send the goods to you, the goods from HDEW come from their UK office so its all legit as far as the consumer is concerned.
Or so I'm led to believe.
Shouldnt the VAT receipt be 1,882.50 less 20% as youre only paying 1,882.50 not 2,268.99?
I assumed that the person who posted the scan of that receipt paid the £2268.99?
The 5DMkIII is currently on HDEW website for £1939.00 (and that's a special offer), I would expect that it would have cost more last year (the scan is dated Aug 2012)?
I seem to recall they were cheap initially when launched, Ive never seen them from day 1 for over 2k at HDEW. Thats why Im a little confused by that "VAT" breakdown as you couldnt claim back the VAT and that means they never paid the VAT?
That VAT receipt looks OK to me apart from they've rounded the VAT element up slightly and so the sum total of the value and the VAT is actually £2269 not the £2268.99 they've printed.
If you run the VAT number through this page it comes back as valid and registered to VALIDHIRST LTD !! SECONDS OUT at the same trading address for the site.

HDEW CAMERAS About Us
Given there have been been threads on Google asking if the firm was legit since at least 2010 (from my Googling) but "HDEW Cameras problem" doesn't fire up much, I'd say they are on the level.
Maybe they don't buy their stock from the UK arm of the camera companies but if you go in with your eyes open about potential warranty issues I don't seen any other reason to worry. I would probably use them.
Pay with a credit card and save/print the product pages in case you need to prove what you originally ordered and you need to use card protection.
[I'm not a lawyer or an accountant and hold no ties with the company]
Yes I figured the price paid for the body was £1882.50 x 1.2 = £2259.00. All of the prices on their web site are in whole pounds and many end in "9".
Also the delivery is quoted ex-VAT as £8.33 when the actual delivery charge paid would have been £9.99 (again x 1.2).
I also ran the check on the VAT number and it came up valid as you say with the correct address. A quick search indicates that HDEW and Validhirst are the same company which has been registered since 1994 and appears to have been run by the same people since then.
I've scoured the internet forums and feedback on HDEW has been overwhelmingly positive since 2010 and before.
They have explicitly stated in their email response to me that VAT is included and a valid warranty is provided. Of course I realise that I will not get the Canon cashback but that is more than offset by what is still a £200+ saving.
Ok I'm done researching, I think it's time to bite the bullet
I'd go for it, they are a good trader just wanted the vat thing clarified as it would help me in the future with purchases.
Yes same here
Well the deed is done
I placed the order last night but clicked "pay by telephone"
Called them a few minutes ago with my CC details. The phone was answered promptly just like my earlier email. Requested VAT invoice and Royal Mail delivery, no probs with either apparently.
Delivery estimated in 3-5 working days, so probably early next week.
Already received confirmation email.
So far so good
Edit: I see the price is now held until 18th April!
The 7D offer (body for £699) has been extended to 18th April if anyone is interested.
Canon 7D Digital SLR Camera Body
If anyone's still interested, here is a post from another forum apparently by the same person who posted the scan of the VAT invoice discussed above, and who apparently did indeed pay £2259 + £10 delivery for a 5D MkIII in Aug 2012
