HDD Replacement Advice

Good Afternoon,

My original 2Tb Samsung HDD drive has just died and I'm after your assistance to choose a replacement.

I currently have 2 3Tb HDD and 2 SSD, one 1Tb and one 2Tb.

I am looking at replacing with another larger capacity (4 or 6Tb) or should I go with another SSD?

I would welcome your thoughts and advice

Many Thanks In Advance

Liam

You can save a lot of money by shucking a USB external drive. The HDD in them is usually the same as buying the bare drives.

One of the 3TB HDD in my NAS failed earlier this week. I also wanted to expand the capacity so I purchased a 6TB "WD My Book" external USB drive, removed the HDD from the enclosure and put it in my NAS.

I'll need to buy another 6TB HDD to make use of the full capacity but I can wait till black Friday as there's usually good deals on the USB external drives.

Hey, my old WoT buddy. Like the others have said, what are you going to use it for? No point spending lots of dosh on SSD if your just sticking infrequently used data on it.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your help.
I'm use my PC mostly for games so I'm thinking a fast HDD or SSHD drive as my other 2 SSDs are almost full. I'm leaning toward a 4Tb SSHD or like IRobot said I can remove the drive from an external

Some good deals on at Amazon if you want to shuck an external drive. 6TB WD Elements is £100 and 8TB My Book is £127.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your advice.
I've bought an 8Gb WD My Book.
I've also learnt a new term 'shucking'. Some of the Urban Dictionary entries are a little eye opening 😁

I picked up a 6TB WD Elements so I can bring my Synology NAS up to 6TB capacity with a pair of 6TB drives.

The WD Elements was easier to get into than the WD My Book but my spare 3TB drive won't quite fit into the empty Elements case. It uses molded rubber corner mounts. The My Book uses rubber mounts screwed into the sides of the HDD.

I'd always game from a hdd. They are very cheap now and an ssd won't make your game run any better
I've just bought some new kit today to upgrade my pc in preparation for the 3080ti next year. I got the Asus maximus 11 and thought it was time to get a ssd. So I opted for the sabrent 1tb rocket. It looks phenomebal value at £110. So maybe this m2 ssd is worth a look for yourself

It will however improve loading times, A LOT! SSD's are what all your games should be on, not an HDD.

Why a buy 3080ti when surely you wont need to buy a new card for years seeing as your current card maxxes everything out at 4K (as you keep telling us).

Actually, your HDD comment makes sense now......

Ssd does not improve a games performance whatsoever. They save a few seconds on loading times and that's it. An ssd won't give extra framerates. Loading times.
At least when I have my new ssd installed I'll a few extra seconds to share my experiences of playing at 4k ultra in all games. Bet you can't wait.

Which gpu have you got? I imagine from your somewhat envious reply you are gaming at low res. Maybe you should check out my YouTube 4k gaming channel to see how games can look for the privileged elite

it can improve some texture loading and occasionally can help with pop in. Red dead has some poor pop in, helped a lot moving to SSD. Some loading times are a huge improvement, Of course will never affect FPS.
Off top of head ages ago bf4 was a minute down to 15-20secs. Same with Forza 7, 45-50 secs down to less than 20 i cant remember but i do remember moving the game within the first half an hour of purchase as the load times between races were infuriating off standard hdd, shaving huge time off of loading helps with the flow of the game when loading is required regularly.
Completely essential purchase these days.

Send me the link to your channel then.

I'm on a 980ti. Considering you said you were getting 4K maxxed out on a 970 i'll be good for a while at my resolution of 1440p.

Never said maxed out mate on the 970.
And when I posted videos of my 970 doing witcher 3 at 4k the forum bullies who said that the 970 couldn't possibly run witcher 3 at 4k, had those videos on here taken down. I suspect the truth hurts, hence the censorship from the forum bullies
Your 980 is very old tech now.
I'm not sure how you would know that the 1080ti cant run games at 4k ultra when your rig is so outdated. By the way, I've still got videos of my 970 running witcher 3 at 4k on YouTube if you are interested. It's always those who haven't got the technology that seem to know what it cant and can do. Second hand knowledge my dear chap ain't the real thing.
Don't forget that YouTube channel of mine. I'm looking forward to your comments!

Seeing is believing.
