Can anyone recommend a hard disk drive and dvd recorder.

main use will be backing up vhs tapes onto HDD then onto DVD

the only other option is to go through the PC route.

    thanks

Pioneer is a make that has a specific VCR (VHS) input setting. (You set the mode by input socket). There are 6 input picture quality presets:
Tuner – suitable for general TV broadcasts
VCR – suitable for video cassettes
    LDP – suitable for Laserdiscs
    plus 3 user settings.

I don't know how the first three differ, but I suppose it's something to do with noise reduction and the different characteristics of the signals from the various sources.

So my suggestion would be to look for a Pioneer 420 around £350.

When copying from VHS you won't need to do better than LP mode on HDD/DVD, that's around 4 hours per DVD.

There are diagrams for wiring with a VCR in the Pioneer manual. Thee is also a set of front sockets if both the rear scarts are in use.
The input presets are described on page 95.

You can download the manual from www.pioneer.co.uk
