HDD Failing to Record?

I have a Samsung UE49MU7000 with an external hard drive connected.
I have had no issues recording and watching from the HD. Now, when I record anything, a few minutes after it starts recording, I get a Failed To Record Error.
I can still watch any previously recorded progamme on the HD, so it seems rather odd. Also, when I turn the TV off, after a few seconds, I can hear the HD stopping, so it appears to be working.

Any ideas?

BTW, when it comes to technical abbreviations on the forum “HD” is High Definition, “HDD” is Hard Disc Drive.

Your HDD is likely to be dying. Did you had all the time plugged hdd to tv?

Yes, It has only ever been used with the TV since new.

I keep saying this, but it can't possibly record a programme when it has no information to record with. My local news has just failed to record (it's on serial record) and when I checked the programme guide it was full of 'no information'. Here is tomorrow's, less than 24 hours ahead. This problem does not affect any of the other devices I record with, but the TV is the only one equipped with Freesat, which I rely on for my so-called-local news.
