can anyone recommend a recorder with the following features

HDD (not too pushed whether it has DVDR as well)
    Divx
    USB-to-HDD copying

ie - basically a media centre that also records

I've looked at the Yamada, Ellion and LiteOn models but they all seem to have significant flaws - are there any other options?

afaik the pioneer doesn't allow you to copy or view DIVX via the USB port.

    Shweeney,

I picked up a Samsung DVD-HR738 from Comet last week which does what you asked for. It has 250Gb at £299 but there is also a DVD-HR733 with 80Gb around £200 on the net.

Both have USB 2.0 which I have used to copy mp3 and Divx files to & from the Recorder plus play directly from the USB device. USB should also work with external hard drives which I will try as soon as my Western Digital arrives.

My DVD-HR738 has HDMI at only 576p BUT it still delivers great pictures and greaty improves Sky+.

I've had it one week and so far very happy with what it promised. Only niggle so far is it seems picky with recordable DVDs.

    I would definitely recommend it.

Which one and what were the reasons for not going for it?

The reason i ask is i have the 1000hx and it does have the features you ask for but the usb port is only usb 1. so transfer speeds are a little slow.
