Can anyone tell me whether they notice an
improvement when playing standard music cd's
in a HDCD decoder cd/dvd player.

It's just that ive been reading the specs on the microsoft
site and the technology is supposed to improve
    standard cd disks too.

i thought id ask here before buying a phono lead.
As i would have to run a phone lead to amp
to use the internal DA decoder in the dvd player.

    thanks........

Yes. I've only got three HDCD's used with Tag DAC20..Dixie Chicks, Blondie No Exit & Dire Straits. But they do seem more dynamic, with better instrument & voice detail.

The problem with claims that using normal CDs in a player that is HDCD compatible, is that it's (usually) impossible to turn off the HDCD decoding stuff, so impossible to say weather the difference in sound is down to the HDCD chipset, or if it's just the difference between different DVD players (if that made any sence what so ever).

The same can be said about weather HDCD versions sound better than non-HDCD versions - though it's generally accepted that there is more dynamics and detail in HDCD recordings as nathan said.

The HDCD decoder cannot be disabled, however living with two high quality CD players- Rotel CDP with HDCD, Rega CDP without HDCD, plus the TAG DAC gives you a idea of normal CD's plus the HDCD's on each CDP...you do eventually settle that a well recorded HDCD does sound better.

Also the HDCD filter in a DAC/CDP also improves a normal CD.

Actually it is possible to 'disable' the HDCD decoder in some equipment in a round about way. However I only know of one disc that has IDENTICAL music with and without HDCD encoding. It shows that HDCD has a beneficial effect.

Re other kit, the HDCD 'chip' (100?) actually has one of the best filters around so in it's time (a few years ago) it was the premium choice, not because of HDCD, but just because it was a good bit of silicon.
