I formatted my HD5 when i bought it, plugged it into pc and went into sonicstage and it says i only have 18.5 or 6 space left. i understand that the operating system needs space but surely not that much!!! has anyone else noticed this??

A 20GB hardrive is actually around that mark. I'm not sure how it works, but its somthing to do with there being 1024KB in a Mb, 1024MB in a GB etc.

My PC has two hard drives, the "40 GB" working out at 37.2 GB, and the "80 GB" is actually 74.5 GB.

Yes, that´s right, it depends on who is calculating. For software people (and your computer´s operating system etc.) 1 GB equals 1024 MB, because it´s all binary based. HD manufacturers on the other hand use the decimal system and say that 1 GB = 1000 MB, maybe because that is what giga, mega, kilo etc. originally meant, but probably also because this system allows them to state a higher number of gigabytes, even if the number of bytes is the same. Silly, but not much one can do about it. :(
