Is anyone using the RM-MC35ELK with their HD5 and, more to the point, what do they think of it?

In most ways, I find it does a great job, but it seems to have one huge failing which, for me, renders it virtually useless: If I want to skip from one artist to another, I have to skip through each of their albums one by one; there's no way of just jumping from one artist to another. Am I doing something wrong, just being fussy, or do I have a defective controller?

Hi, I am also using it and it does the same. You have to go to the album of preference one by one. Still, I really think it's a great remote!

Yes; useful link, but those instructions don't reveal some clever-but-difficult-to-figure-out solution to its 'fault'. I think this is the remote Sony is going to be selling over here specifically for the HD5. I love this Walkman, but am starting to regret buying it because of the poor remote (I like to keep the player in my bag whilst out and about, so a good full-function remote is important to me).

I'm now awaiting delivery now of an MC40ELK remote; I hope this is the answer to the problem but I must admit, I didn't research it all at before ordering one. I just assumed it was better... Does anyone know if it will be an improvement over the 35?

For me it is. However on the rare occasions that I do pick up the HD5, because it responds much quicker than the truly-poor-navigation HD3 where the MC40 really was a boon to have, the remote has become of more limited use. However the scroll wheel is certainly a better interface than anything else in a similar vein on a remote.

I've now received the RM-MC40ELK and can confirm it's a big improvement over the 35 as it solves the problem I mentioned above. I'd certainly recommend the 40ELK to HD5 owners looking for a remote (and advise against the 35ELK).

Just a heads-up, thet the '35' remote is available on eBay for about 18 pounds, delivered. (About $30 shipped to the US.) The '40' remote generally costs a lot more when I've seen it offered.

Indeed, the 35 can be had for as little as £15 on ebay, plus shipping, and the 40 seems to be going for around £50.

I'm very confused about which one Sony thinks we should use. I understood a remote would be made avaialable and it would cost about £30. I assume this is the '35'?

I paid about £40 on eBayfor the 40ELK. It's quite a bit more expensive than the 35, but in my opinion worth it. (They apparently cost about £90 from Sony, sold as a 'spare part' for the MD players they're supplied with. An outrageous price.)

My understanding (from a Sony Centre) is that Sony's going to be selling two different remotes for the HD5: The 35ELK and a lower spec model with no LCD!

Yes, definitely you can jump from artist to artist. A HUGE improvement over the 35. Haven't tried by genre yet (I never use the genre feature on the player).

*EDIT* Just checked: Yes, by genre too.

    Why are you confused?

I posted a link earlier in this thread for the instruction manual for the RM-MC35ELK which Sony are pushing for the NW-HD5 / NW-HD5H and it actually names these players in the title of the manual itself.

As for the 40ELK I have one myself, main advantage over the 35ELK is that it has a 3 line LCD, disadvantage it's bulkier as a result.

The remote without the LCD is the RM-MC60, see this link under

Optional Accessories - Remote control for NW-HD5 on the left.

would everyone definately recomend buying the more expensive model of remote then?
I used to have a sony md that came with the cheaper remote and I thort it was quite good, but is the more expensive one really that much better?

my remote came today, the more expensive one, and I don't really like it.
the length of the display is way too short, on the cheaper control, the text length is quite a bit more.
anybody interested in buying the more expensive one?
it is brand new and I will sell for £40 including postage to the UK,just getting my money back

I've just tried my old Minidisc remote, an RM-MZ2S, which kind of works, but the display doesn't and there doesn't seem to be a way to pause. So I think I'm going to buy the 35 off Ebay.

The text is shorter on the 40 remote? I just got the 35. The actual text for songs/artists is 10 characters wide. It does scroll after a second or so.

I do like the remote as it covers the basics handily. Just trying to figure out how to manage the remote and headphone wires, every time I unclip the remote to visually select songs/albums.

BTW, the 35 is available for (I think) 18 pounds (shipped) from eBay, or about $31 in the US. I think the seller's name is pigheadman.

I remember having the 35 for my old MD player and I thort it was longer than 10 characters. the 40 is about 12 or 13 I think.
I don't like the layout of the 40 remote tho.
also does anyone know how to alter the artist details on sonicstage?
cuz when I go to artists, there not all put under one artist.
eg - I have 50 cent - outa control and then as another seperate artist 50 cent feat mobb deep - outta control remix
really annoying, want all 50 cent songs to be under "50 cent" as one artist
