HD Resolutions Query

Hi There

I'm new to all this HD stuff and am getting a bit confused over the resolutions of different TV's.

Ami right in thinking the following:-

1920 x 1080 = 1080p/i

1366 x 768 = 1080i/720p

1280 x 768 = 720p

1024 x 768 = 576p/i

I'm probably wrong but if someone can give the right info I would be very grateful.

It's simple

1920*1080 = 1080i/p (all sets with this res can handle 1080i/p and show all the detail and also show 576i/p and 720p through upscaling)

1280*720 = 720p (all sets with this res can also handle 576i/p which will be upscaled and 1080p/i which is downscaled)

1368*768 = something in between that can cope with 720p (upscaled), 1080i (downscaled) and in some cases 1080p (downscaled)

1024*768 = a Plasma resolution with non-square pixels that can handle 720p (downscaled) 1080i (downscaled) and in some cases 1080p (downscaled).

When images are downscaled, some of the information and resolution is of course lost so you don't get the full benefit of the enhanced resolution. When upscaled some is added but as it's interpreted you don't get the full clarity of a full resolution source.

720*576 = 576i/p Non square pixels if widescreen image. All HD sets can handle this and upscale automatically to the panel resolution. Lower res sets like the 1024*768 ones don't have to do much scaling and so the image looks better but don't show the full benefit of HD.

You seem to be confusing TV resolutions with HD delivery formats.

All HD Ready TVs accept 720p and 1080i signals, but few TVs are 720p or 1080i native, so these formats must be scaled to the resolution of the TV.

The most common HD Ready TV resolutions are:

1024 x 720p (37" plasma, oblong pixels)
1024 x 768p (42"/43" plasma, oblong pixels)
1024 x 1080i (42" ALiS plasma, interlaced, oblong pixels)
1366 x 768p (most LCDs, 50" plasmas)
1920 x 1080p (a few large screen LCDs, Pioneer PDP5000EX 50" plasma)

720*576 = 576i/p Non square pixels if widescreen image.

720x576 and 720x480 are non-square pixels in both their 4:3 and 16:9 variants. (In all cases the pixels are non-square - there are effectively 4 different pixel aspect ratios for the 4 different variants of SD video - 720x576 4:3, 720x576 16:9, 720x480 4:3, 720x480 16:9)

To be accurate 702x576 is the resolution of a 4:3 or 16:9 signal. The 720x576 image has 9 extra pixels on the left and right to avoid truncating/cropping issues that might cause ringing (similarly that is why black level is at 16 not 0 and white at 235 not 255 in 8 bit digital video) - effectively the 720x576 image is slightly wider than 4:3 or 16:9.

(And don't get me started on 720x480 vs 720x486...)
