Using a Canon HF200 HD camcorder if I record in it's lowest quality setting which is 5 Mbps @ 1440 x 1080 will it still be better than the quaity I get from a minidv tape recording?
I just did 1920x1080 at 5 Mbps on my JVC and i am very surprised at the picture quality it blows and SD video out of the water , and if you sat about 7 feet away it would look almost as good as 17 Mbps,
Picture below is only 70% of full size , largest size i can post is 1mb and file is 1.2mb
1920x1080 at 5 Mbps , I can get 75 hours plus on my 120gb hdd in this quality.
The resolution will still be better as miniDV has a fixed resolution of 720x576 (PAL). However the low bit rate would mean that there is a good chance of fast movement being jumpy.
Both are quality issues, so it all depends on which is more important to you - smooth movement or higher resolution.
