Hi everyone. I'm new here. I bought a humax foxsat hdr 500gb a few months ago and am using it with the sky dish, cables etc. the hd signal was great to start with however recently it is poor and looks no different to sd. In addition the sd channels are awful. The signal strength and quality are both showing at 100%. could this be a problem with the dish? I've reset to factory settings and performed retunes manually and automatically to no avail. The dish seems well fixed in position and there dont seem to be any obvious problems with the cabling. This is my second box as i took the first one back thinking this fault was with the box itself. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Please note I am not getting the Bad or Poor Signal message as in other threads. Thanks

Turn off any image processing in the TV, in particular "sharpness" and "noise reduction". These either degrade the image or introduce false edge effects. Is your TV mode set to display 1080?

My Panasonic TV (TX-P42g30) states it's in 1080 mode. I've tried all the things you've suggested but there's no change. I've currently paused the Foxsat on Channel 4HD and changing the V-format between 576 and 1080 seems to make no difference at all to the picture. Could it be the dish?

You are connected by HDMI to the TV?
If so try setting VFORMAT to auto (for a test) and move between channels (SD & HD) - does the TV spot the output change?

Did you make any HD recordings of the Wimbledon tennis? In their usual end of court wide shots, you should see the net as a grey smudge in SD but it clearly as a net in HD. Another good test is the output from NHK World although be aware they sometimes use SD material in their news broadcasts and in documentaries showing other broadcasters' recordings.

Also remember that many ITV and BBC1 programmes are actually SD upscaled by the broadcasters. ITV call this "upscaled HD" which is a false description if you think about it. It's only slightly better than their original description of this material as "remastered HD"

Thanks for all your help and quick replies by the way. Yes, I'm connected by HDMI. The Foxsat info bar shows the image is 1080i when I move to HD channels. Incidentally BBC HD is not too bad followed by ITV1HD then C4HD in order of worsening HD quality. BBC One HD is the poorest signal.

Different channels do provide different quality.
Try to borrow another receiver to see whether yours is at fault or not.

Because the image is 1080i it doesn't mean the box is outputting 1080i. You need your TV to tell you that. Put the epg on the screen and cycle through the vformat options. The difference between the 576 and 1080 options should be easily seen.
