HD Fury Linker FAQ.

HDR enabled console video games, do not actually send metadata like a film would, so depending on the make of TV, the way HDR is handled will vary; for example Samsung will ramp it's brightness up to the max and clip highlights, but LG will assume said content is 4000nits, and tonemap so every specular detail is present, at the expense of brightness.

None of these approaches are wrong, it's just comes down to what the company feels it's best.

Many feel LG OLED's are dim, using this method will rectify the situation, and bring your games back to life.

Before you start, make sure you are using full 18gbps HDMI cables, otherwise you'll be in trouble from the start!

Q: What is a HD Fury Linker, and how will it improve my 7 series LG OLED experience?

A: Essentially the Linker will inject metadata into the game, so instead of having nothing, you are adding in actual parameters for the TV to work with, so in the case of a LG B7, it no longer works on the presumption that it's working with 4000nits, but you are telling it 1000nits or whatever, in doing so you are taking much of the shackles off, allowing the TV to get a lot brighter across the board, including brighter specular highlights, you'll also have 21ms lag and deep blacks, unlike active HDR, which raises blacks and gives you 63ms.

Q: How do I incorporate a Linker into my Setup?

A: The Linker has 2 HDMI inputs, and 1 output, ideally you want it to be at the end of your video chain, so if you have an AVR or soundbar, you want the HDMI output going to the input of the Linker, then to the TV, so then your AVR acts like a switch, and every device can be used in conjunction with Linker.

Q: How do I set Linker up?

A: Firstly you'll need a Laptop or PC for initial setup, which includes downloading the Windows GUI software, and firmware updates if you need them.

Everything is here in the download section:

Linker 4K60 4:4:4 600MHz | HDFury.com | Connect and Fix everything in HDMI

The Linker is powered by USB 3.0 ideally 5V 2A, but USB 2.0 1A does work, as I can confirm.

On the unit itself, you want the Edid switch on the middle setting, which is custom mode, and that allows you to control via a Laptop, or a Goblue dongle, and to use a custom preset (which is your new HDR injection settings) also scale needs to be on the middle setting too (no upscaling or downscaling).

On the software itself, you want to tick custom:

capture1v5dhz.png

Then select HDR/AVI tab and enter this in custom HDR Injection:

87:01:1a:28:02:00:c2:33:c4:86:4c:1d:b8:0b:d0:84:80:3e:13:3d:42:40:e8:03:32:00:10:27:90:01

In the BT2020 tab, tick follow input.

capture2v6c47.png

These settings will give you 1000nits 0.0001 blacks and a 10000 maxcll ceiling.

(Ignore screenshot metadata)

Go back to edid and upload it.

Go back to HDR/AVI tab, check enable custom HDR then send.

*IMPORTANT* ONLY ENABLE INJECTION WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY IN A GAME, AND DO NOT EXIT AN HDR GAME UNTIL YOU TURN OFF INJECTION*

It'll screw up SDR and it won't turn off, so follow that.
HD Fury said a fix is coming, but doing it the way I've said works fine.

Q: Is there an easier way of activating custom HDR?

A: Yes, there is a device called a Goblue, which is used in conjunction with the smartphone app (Android/iOS) you can toggle it on and off, at any point, at the touch of your screen, it's an invaluable option, and one I'd say is a must buy.

It's powered by USB, and the Linker connects to Goblue, and draws power from that.

Q: If my Linker gets stuck in HDR mode, how do I get out of it?

A: On the Windows GUI or Goblue app, go to 'BT2020' tab and press 'Follow Input' that will turn off injection, and return SDR back to normal.

The image is from the Vertex app, but Linker is similar:

I can confirm this works wonders, thanks @BRAKKUS1

After struggling to get any sort of decent picture settings for PUBG on Xbox X (notorious for poor HDR), even with setting DC on High and trying standard picture mode etc, using this has been a god send!

I'm still getting use to using the linker as this sort of stuff baffles me but the picture now is excellent, DC is switched off as it's no longer needed!

I will be buying a GoBlue for sure as it will make life a lot easier.

I've not tried any other games yet apart from a quick blast on Forza 7 but it does make that look a lot better too.

Quick question though, I can see in the guide that it says to go back to edid and upload it, that's something I've not done. Only enable custom HDR and then hitting send, will I be missing out on something by not doing that?

Awesome! I've updated it with a few things too.

No you are not missing out, that's just to save a preset of all the options you want, and can be activated via laptop, switch on unit, or Goblue app.

Ahh that explains why the switch doesn't do anything for me currently then.

So if I have the switch in the middle, enter the custom metadata, upload the edid, switch to sink, launch the game and switch back to middle that will then enable custom HDR? Then when I've finished switch back to sink and exit the game and it will default to follow input?

Should do, my only reservation is the sticking overblown SDR, but it might do it.

Just checking as I've spoken to tons of guys about the Linker, but when you've finished and back out to SDR, you click follow input in the bt2020 tab yeah? Cause that will give you proper SDR back.

Is using the GoBlue a lot simpler? Do you only have to enable/disable customer hdr on that?

They way I've been doing it is untick custom hdr, force off, quit game and then tick follow input

On Goblue you press custom HDR on, when you're finished press off, then press follow input, that'll make SDR ok again, basically an extra press vs Vertex.

Don't think you need to do the force off step with your laptop setup.

I'll figure it out eventually! On the windows gui do you have to untick follow input then tick it again before quitting

Hello,

As instructed, i'm moving my questions here.

So I have a PS4 Pro ->(HDMI1) LG B7 OLED -> (HDMI2 ARC) LG SJ8
I also have a Kodi box that never gets used anymore and a Panasonic 4k blu ray player. Everything is all plugged into the TV.

From what ive read, as the PS4 Pro would plug into the linker, and then stright into the TV, im not using the 2nd port on the linker, so would i need the go blu to turn the linker on and off? I could just leave it on all the time?

Also, games that I have, Battlefront 1 and 2, God of War, GTA, Battlefield 1, Last of Us, some more I cant remember.

From what I gather, if you upload the custom hdr metadata to the edid, then you can use the switch on the linker to turn off injection. Will be trying it later on or tomorrow.

You can't leave the linker on injecting the custom hdr as it wont switch off hdr when exiting any enabled hdr game.

It does sound a lot easier using a goblue than the windows gui though to be honest

Yeah so PS4 to Linker then to TV, you'd still need a PC, Goblue or creating a custom edid like adbailey said, because you'll need to turn custom metadata on and off, personally I'd go the Goblue/Phone app route, as it's so easy, and great to sit back and watch the differences kicking whilst switching.

Have Battlefield 1 and BF2, they both look fantastic! Like turning a light switch on and off :)

@BRAKKUS1 Just reading the manual for the linker, what are the custom edid tables and do I need to worry about them?

If I can ever afford this I'll get it! Shame I don't review stuff anymore - would have been a perfect thing to cover and do an article about LG OLED Gaming issues.

Just tried uploading the custom HDR to edid, however when putting the switch in sink HDR is staying enabled so not sure what I am doing wrong

Might be a similar thing happening with SDR staying on when switching custom HDR off via Windows and Goblue, when in fact only by toggling follow input, can you actually do it, obviously the unit can't do that.

Yeah looks that way, shame that.

Will give that new metadata a try tonight

It's a doozy :)

Try some other games for goodness sake lol :rotfl:
I know I know! Times limited and if my mates on we always do Duo's on PUBG! Definitely need to try some other stuff. Will be on the BFV beta when that hits

Yeah, you combined the two strings together right?

Just make sure you are applying it properly.
