When I switch the HD-E1 (playing through HDMI to my plasma), the plasma flickers like mad until the HD-E1 has finished booting up and it is able to display either a SD or HD DVD.

Once the machine is ready to display the menu etc, then the picture is fine. It is only from when the power button is displayed until the menu is displayed that I have an issue. In fact if I press the SETUP button on the HD-E1, nothing is displayed until a DVD had been loaded and I press stop.

I am not sure if the problem is actually with the setting on the DVD or Plasma.

It is a problem I guess I can live with but apart from being irritating; can this fast flickering cause a problem with the Plasma TV?

It also happens when I switch my player on. It's connected by component to an Hitachi plasma. After the Tosh log disappears its OK.

Is this your only HDMI source? Its quite common for source/display combinations using HDMI to take a short while to settle down. Often down to HDCP handshaking.

To be honest, this does not happen on mine. I have mine coupled to my Panasonic plasma via HDMI.
The screen just goes black untill HD DVD comes up, followed by the menu.

It didn't happen with my Samsung DVD player via HDMI.

If it is not doing any harm to the display then I can put up with it; it's just a bit disconcerting with the flickering.

Mine does the same, it flickers rapidly in a greenish black colour until I put a dvd in the tray. Works fine after that.
Hopefully be sorted when toshiba bring out updates.

My XA1/HDMI/Hitachi plasma combo does not flicker during the bootup phase...

(ps - I live in the US, if that matters)

This happens on my E1 as well. Just powered it up and got a pink flashing screen of all things. Unplugged the hdmi cable, re-plugged it back in and it's fine. I think that it is something to do with the "handshake" between the tv and the player.

Mine does it slightly. Have it via HDMI to my Sony 40" LCD. It starts, the screen changes to 576p, then flickers green for not even a second then changed to 1080i. I guess it's just cycling through the display capabilities?
