Hi is this such a thing as a high definition dvd?, also are these available as region 2 disks?
HD DVD is a new format which is not compatible with current DVD players.
Its part of a new Hi definition change thats coming in the near future. The other big format next to HD DVD will be Blu Ray made by Sony.
If you want to play HD DVD's you will need a new HD DVD player. There are none out yet, so youl have to wait for about another year or so. Same goes for the software.
Recently a few hollywood companies (paramount, WB,) joined the HD DVD side, so you will see their movies out first.
The closest you can get to HD DVD with current DVD technology would be a high end Player like a Denon 3910 and "Terminator 2 Extreme Edition" DVD which was made from an HD source.
As for region, well you may need to get the region 1 "T2 EE", coz im not sure if its out in the UK.
Some more info:
I thought that the new pioneer 868 was hdmi and connecting it to the pioneer 505 xde which is also hdmi would be ok?
it has hdmi but is not hi def just progressive
Both DVi and HDMI are interconective, and they give current DVD's higher resolutions. (like what they will give HD DVD and Blu Ray's.)
With some DVDs the quality is stunning (T2 EE) but with older or badly made DVDs the quality is blatantly poorer.
This is one way to show:
1 Bad manufacturing and
2 how the DVD format has reached its limit.
Give it a couple more years before investing on something like HD DVD or Blu Ray. There is no clear winner at this point, and its more that likely that eventually some one will make a players that supports both formats.
How is this so
DVI and HDMi are interchangeable but they're only transport mechanisms. They don't change resolutions only deliver content from the source to the screen.
The reason T2EE looks so good is because it is hi def. Nearly everything else is standard definition. Some DVD players have the ability to upconvert to hi def, eg 720p or 1080i. Thus create a hi def look by scaling everything up to fit your plasma, monitor, etc. But it won't be as good as original hi def sources.
Yeah thats what i meant. Your player and display need to be compatible and offer 720P or higher.
In order to use these functions you do need to use HDMI or DVI.
It is possible thtough component but only the XBox offers 720P or 1080i. I havent seen any other product that does.
DVD players do, but only through DVi or HDMI.
I do recomend this though. My 3910 looks stunning!
ok will the pioneer 868 avi play t2 ee?
Yes.....it'll play Disc 1 but not the HD version on Disc 2.
