An almost impossible question. The answer is probably a second hand JVC HMHDS1 from eBay. This was one of the very first HD recorders and came with an SVHS recorder/player. It ceased production a couple of years ago and most people would rather have an HD combined with a DVD these days so they are available very cheaply (but very rarely as not many were sold!).

You need to decide what features you want before it is possible to advise you. It may be that if you already subscribe to Sky you might consider a Sky+ box as a way of getting an HD recorder. Otherwise you need to think what size disk drive you want/need, whether or not or would prefer DVD-RAM and/or DVD-RW capability. Do you want progressive scan capability? Do you want MPEG4 capability? What sort of I/O do you want. Do you want Firewire/iLink/1394 input/output?

Too many questions - not enough answers!
