Quite an interesting article over at CD Freaks:

Alot of speculation and wind in the article (as is normal for CD Freaks) but it is going to be of interest to some - and I should imagine this is how they are planning to region lock the machines as well. I would think it almost certain BluRay will have the same/similar protection.

The silly thing is, if they are so bothered by people buying discs from other regions then the answer is simple.

Release films sooner on DVD to reduce camcorder piracy and have a global release date for the DVD. If HD-DVD is so gorgeous to look at anyway, it should kill the camcorder pirate market.

Aah, but those crazy pirates will start using HDV ;) . Seriously though, the HD-DVD market is unlikely to be interested in such low quality versions anyway. However, if or when digital cinema takes off, the encryption will have to be secure. Satellite distribution could put films much higher quality than HD-DVD into their hands.
