both my 360 and hdvd are upright, no probs what so ever and it stopped me using them as places to put cups of tea, so the case is less grubby to boot.

My 360 was upright for a year and it never scratched anything which goes to show it wasn't being upright that caused it.

What can cause damage however is switching between the two positions when there's a disc in the drive.

That doesn't prove it was being upright that caused it though - I mean if someone had a disc scratched when it was flat (which has happened), then does that prove it was because it was flat?

Both my 360 and HD DVD drives are upright and I have never had a problem with scratched discs etc. Should be fine, so long as its not bumped or moved around whilst there is a disc spinning.
