Was just over at www.netgem.com looking at Freeview Boxes with component outputs. In their Products Section they have a coming soon advert for this :

    netbox HD

The flat screen’s companion to enjoy
DTT and ADSL High Definition services

In the next few months, the HD netbox will accompany the High Definition roll out on DTT and ADSL.

Any idea what this is, its not clear at all ? The site does mention the French markets quite a bit so perhaps its something we may get at a later date?

Yep the french are using mpeg4 on DTT to supply PAY services while I believe the free stuff continues with the much cheaper and mature mpeg2 STB's.

There will not be any significant HD on DTT for the quite some time (not until they adopt mpeg4) and xDSL is still knee deep the quagmire of LLU unbundling which BT have stalled for so many years.

AIUI the French are planning to use MPEG4 on DTT for both HD and Pay TV SD services - only using MPEG2 for SD FTA services (where there are benefits of scale for using existing FTA DTT boxes based on MPEG2 already manufactured for existing DVB-T regions like the UK, Spain, Germany, Australia, Italy, Scandinavia etc.)

Could be the HD Netgem box is for France - or for feeding SD to HD displays - as the Netgem is also a web-browser and streaming video client these days isn't it? (Though it will be interesting to see if it handles streamed HD MPEG2 or MPEG4)

The French have definitely gone one better than BBC/ITV for their limited HD Freeview service trial. Do we know the makeup of the chosen trialists?

TF1 are doing a 9 month HD DVT trial in 3 cities; Paris, Lyons and Marseille, The box is available to purchase here at FNAC for 249 Euros.

The French may have been slow starters on the DVT front but certainly don't let the grass grow under their feet.

Isn't it curious the London with its very crowded spectrum can find room for a trial DVT frequency where the rest of the country cannot?

    Regards
