HD box choked on recording two HD channels last night

Had a strange and worrying thing happen last night ... was recording Lost HD and the Masters on BBCHD ... around 10.15 started to watch Lost from the planner (basically to skip ad breaks) and the playback was awful - jerky, audio drop outs, etc ...

I guess it couldn't handle the hard drive doing write, write and read with HD content all at the same time ...

Worrying thing is that this is exactly what it is meant to do !!

Anyone else notice problems with two HD streams at the same time ?

I was recording 24 on HD at 9pm and Lost on HD at 10pm, playing back 24 on chase play at around 9:30 it was very jerky, exactly how you described, lots of sound dropouts and occasional video "slow down".

I just put it down to the periodic flakiness of the box and did a reset after I'd caught up on Lost (which did NOT have any weirdness, just 24??)

Sky flaky-HD for you.

Glad not the only one !! ... think this was the first time that I was chase playing an HD programme at the same time as recording another though

Playback of LOST afterwards was fine (but was not recording another HD stream by then)

Anyone have this regularly happening ?

I put it down to it being flaky just because I've been doing exactly the same for the last x weeks with no problems at all, just last night.

Flaky-HD!

Mine does exactly the same thing but if I try and watch a SD programme instead its fine, the thing is if I unplug the HD box it doesnt do it for a couple of weeks but then eventually it starts choking again.
Obviously I cant unplug while its recording (i did once between adverts) but if I remember afterwards its fine next time I try to record and watch HD at the same time....for a while.

It has been reported since HD launched that the box sometimes (always?) has an issue trying to handle two HD channels at once. In fact after a failure early on I have tried to avoid any attempt to get this box to do it.

I think another fault that I have seen reported is two recordings or a playback whilst recording two HD programmes that run back to back (as 24 and Lost).

I think there is a workaround depending on how you set your padding (Auto?) but not sure what. Maybe somebody can explain?

Also Lost is reported to be downloaded by Anytime simultaneous with the live Sky Onc HD transmission - presumably creating issues if you try to use both tuners at that time. Anytime is supposed to stop recording and leave your uses as priority but I have had a phantom clash message this week (telling me a recording failed when it clashed with another - even though there was no other set unless this was an Anytime recording going on unseen).

Did those of you getting problems last night find Lost in your anytime planner this morning? If so then it was presumably downloaded at the time you were recording/watching and having some trouble.

Yes I had last night's Lost in the Anytime planner this morning - I didn't look last night after the SkyOne Lost had run to see if it was there then though.

I had the same issue last week with Lost. It was also downloading to Anytime as well. The box was unusable and I had to wait to the next day to watch it.

This week Lost wasn't being downloaded to Anytime and I was able to start wathcing Lost before the normal recording had completed.

Yes, I've had this sort of symptom happen twice in the last 2 months, and both times a complete power off/on has fixed it. I recognise this sort of thing from my job, and to me it smacks of memory leaks in the software, one of the most common programming bugs. Over time it consumes more and more cpu cycles just tidying up memory. Just my theory, but it fits the symptoms.

Sorry for the uppage.

Exactly the same thing happened to me on Sunday so I rang Sky.

An engineer came out today and swapped the box for a brand new one as he said tuner 2 was faulty.

Same thing happened to me tonight, i was recording Planet Earth on BBC HD and settled down to (finally) watching the awesome Battlestar Galactica (also HD).

No chance, jerky, sound dropouts etc...

Its obvious the box cant handle it.

Are you guys saying a reboot fixes it?

Yep...same here...dont have to be recording 2HD channels...just watching one and recording the other causes freak outs and audio drop outs.

My box gets red hot when this happens. I recon its overheating.

No problems last night - recorded SuperStorm thing on BBCHD and 24 and chase played 24 while still recording both ... 24 overlapped with Lost recording and chasing too ... haven't checked anytime to see if lost was recording there as well ... bizarre !!

I had the same problem last night, recording 24 a dn watching it about 20 mins behind...jerky and audio drop outs. Did a sky planner rebuild, which seemed to hang....powered off the box and it worked again, missed 10 mins of 24 tho... Sky need to sort this !!!!

Phew!!! Thought this was going to be my first Faulty HD Box !! (No probs so far since install last August!!)
This happened to me for the first time this weekend both were HD recordings (Wife's Joseph rubbish saturday night on BBC HD and last nights lost!!)
Both times only recording one programme at a time, but both occasions we started watching them from the beginning when they were half way through recording!! Watched lost after it had recorded, seemed fine apart from one sound drop after last lot of advert, pause and play seemed to sort that one out!!!
To be honest, not tried reboot yet, will have a go tonight.

I had an overlapped recording last night which merged 2 movies into one after i pressed record on both of these movies it should of set them up apart but because they were one after the other it got confused?

Also i can report as a couple of others have done here that i have big audio drop outs, and the worst audio drop out ever was last week when it went crazy dropping off and on so fast it was doing it about 10 times a second.
I hope they can sort out the audio drop outs as even the mrs who is not a techie like me has said it does it quite a lot and she doesnt tend to take notice of detail really.

Sky need to get things sorted.

I noticed a distinct deterioration with recorded material I was watching on delayed basis last night. I had set it up to record 'Foyles War' and '24' then 'lost' ensuring 'no padding' in setup to avoid overlap probs', only for 'Foyles War' to cut out half way through. This is the second time this has happened with this programme so I'm assuming it was split in the EPG requiring two entries in the planner for the same programme.

Did anybody else have this problem in either SkyHD or Sky +?
