Hi alll. New to forum. Can I please have opinions? Have done considerable research into new plasma and HD. Seems the Panny 500 series is the one to beat (though interested to hear why the Hitachi with greater number of pixels less profiled). However, approx £2.2k + 300 for new HD sky plus box + extra subscription levy for HD + new HD DVD in due course + premium cost of HD discs when become available etc etc. Maybe extra £2.5k over the Panny 42PE50 which gets a great write up in recent mag. Is it REALLY worth the difference? has anyone been luck enough to see the two side by side with one displaying HD and the other not but showing the same images? Just beginning to wonder whether now really is a bad time to invest in HD. Thank you for your thoughts and comments.

I suppose if you are the type of person to invest 2.2k on a HD Plasma you may well be into Home Cinema in a big way and the extra expense of buying Sky HD, Xbox360, Blue Ray/HD-DVD, PS3 and all the relevant software isn't an issue.I bought a PV500 and will not use the HDMI connection until next year but the extra couple of hundred quid i shelled out over a PE50 will be a worthwhile investment next year, and now I'm enjoying the incredible pq of the PV500 in the knowledge that next year I could have bought a PE50 when all this amazing HD content is available.

MORE pixels does NOT equal BETTER Picture

I didn't say it did, I realise for instance the PE50 looks just as impressive as a PV500 at the moment but I opted to get a PV500 for the HDMI input.I'm well into games and the PS3 supports HDMI input and I know I'd be gutted if I saw it running through HDMI and I'd bought an SD plasma. This is purely my opinion and Digital HD content may not be all it's cracked up to be but for a few hundred quid extra I'll take the risk.

Soz HD,Just out of curiosity what's your take on HD.I've followed lots of your posts and you seem to be a real advocate of SD, don't you think Digital connections/Higher resolution screens are the way forward ?

HD is great. Not all technology for displaying HD is great. That is where there will be disagreements. Alis and E-ALIS are not the same.........Non ALIS panels do not physically work like other plasma panels.....oh what a mess,

Thanks hornydragon. Can you please explain why more pixels does not equste to better definition. This seems to be the (obviously) simplistic explanation offered by retailers and in the mags.

On a separate point, would I be correct in thinking that the bigger LCDs (say the LG LP1D) are not as good in terms of definition and showing higher speed moving objects as the plasmas?

more pixels may equal higher resolution but that does not equal better image accuracy for example how does a DVD which is 720x576 res fit a plasma (none are 720x576)???????. I am an advocate of accuracy good HD is jaw dropping, pant wettingly good bad HD is no patch on top draw SD hence HD doesnot necassarily equal good or better than SD its a bit like using engine size as a measure of performance for a vehicle alone out of context it means nothing......................GOod scaling (which isnt a numeric value for the market BS to flock too) is far more important in a fixed pixel display than the number of pixels..............

THanks g your alright too mate........

docnaz this is very very complex and i would suggest that trying to get your head around it all is going to take longer than you want to spend of the subject, So let your eyes do the work not your brain...........if the picture looks good then consider it, if it looks crap then walk away, I often wander into dixons stores and i would not part with cash for anything they have on display PQ wise as they all look useless.........ideally you need to see at least one properly set-up and configured screen to act as a bench mark

    Tx again hornydragon,
that has got to be the best advice yet. I have been to Richer Sounds and John Lewis. At JL, they were playing an HD demo on the Panny - left everthingeverything else as poor second best. Will let my eyes do the walking (all the way to the bank/overdraft/loan/sell everthing else etc!)

Fantastic picture, colours, sound, HD ready, VGA input, built in tuner, there are a lot of happy PV500 owners on here.

    Where abouts are you?

I saw the 50 and 500 in the same shop, but only the 500 was display HD images, the difference is vast as you would expect.
It depends how long you can wait...there will be a few more to choose from in a couple of months and it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be, my thoughts are that there will not be one perfect screen, but a few that are very very good with a few minor flaws.

am in West London. Agree with you re the panny's picture having seen HD display in JL recently. Wife has "suggested" (not unreasaonably to be far) room needs to be ready to recevice such a lovely piece of kit so costing me new wooden floor, decorating and new curtains. The hidden costs of upgrading to plasma!!

Don't you need to get the TV first, then you can plan the rest around it?

Mine is not to reason why. I think can do either way. Am more annoyed about having bought Pioneer 720HS 18months ago and no component out. Still, will do for a while 'til High Def DVD recorders starts up.
