A friend in the states has stated that he has downloaded some HD material from microsoft web site, also from his sony hidef video camera and burnt it on a normal 4.7gb dvd and plays it in a normal dvd player connected to his Hi Def LCD using HDMI.

He states that its palying in true HD 1080, can this be true. ??????

No. If its a 'normal' dvd player it wont decode 1080i or p regardless of format.

When he burnt the files they were probaley converted to DVD spec meaning they are no longer HD.

Unless by 'normal DVD player' he means an XBox 360 which can play HD WMV files off a DVD.

But it's more likely they are downscaled as previously mentioned and he just hasn't noticed. I can't see a difference playing jpegs back in my upscaling DVD player against playing them back on the 360 in HD.
