For those interested the current Home Cinema Choice (September) features reviews of:

    Pioneer 520
    Overall 4/5
    Highs: RGB input, backup, editting
Lows: No component output, can't define DVD thumbnails

    Toshiba RD-XS32
    Overall 4.5/5
Highs: Recording quality, excellent editting/authoirng flexibility, definable menus
Lows: User interface, DVD+RW compatibility (or lack thereof)

Well worth picking up the magazine if your interested in those models.

What video also has a review of the Pioneer 720 which they gave 5 stars.
Highs Hard Disk capacity, flexible dubbing and editing, superb recording quality.

As I already posted on another thread ;)

    Pioneer 720
Highs: Hard Disk capacity, flexible dubbing and editing, superb recording quality
Lows: Full resolution DVDs 2hr 20mins, no component output, no user-definable thumbnails

Unfortunately the lack of component and authoring options puts it below the equivalent Toshiba RX33 which is the general view of most people: HCC for example.

The Pioneer 920 looks the most promising unit from Pioneer this year:

No I didn't - I stated 720. I'm not talking about this thread but the "DVD Recorder Reviews - Panasonic, Toshiba, Thompson and Pioneer" I started on the 26 June (now on page 4).

Once you have dubbed to DVD-R? WVWE stated you didn't:

"Thumbnails representing the individual recordings are displayed but you have no control over their content"

..which was my experience as well when I tried the display machine (albeit briefly) in my local AV store. Do note the Toshiba allows you to define menu backgrounds as well.

Phelings seems to think it WILL allow you to set the thumbnails so hopefully it won't be an issue. I'm surprised HCC and WVWE got something like that wrong though. Just goes to show you can't rely on any review to cover all the bases.
