It's my opinion that HCC are the UK's premier Home Cinema mag, I agree with most of their viewpoints and reviews, however when it comes to subwoofers they are on their own planet IMO.

Their choices for first, second and third in the sub category certainly didn't surprise me, it's their reasons for voting for them that shocked me.

The Q150E was number one and described as the "fastest, deepest and most accurate in it's class", now I'm not slagging off the 150E but at £500 it's nowehere near the best in it's class.

Second was the B&W ASW 675 which I've used myself and yes it is a fine sub, but at £650 it has it's superiors like the CHT-15 and Paradigm Servo-15.

Third was the Vibe Zeta, don't know much about this sub but HCC said in practise it outperforms anything at the £600 price range, seems like a contradiction when you consider what came first and second

I personally find it shocking that the Paradigm Servo 15 is ignored in this area, a cynical person might deduce that patriotism comes into it, or worse backhanders :(

I feel sorry for the newbies who read these articles and buy according to them, thank god for forums like this is all I can say.

For the record I'm a subscriber to HCC and don't want this thread to turn into a HCC bash, it's their subwoofer articles that are in question not the magazine which I would defend

Strangely enough I have to agree with Phil, in that the majority of the magazine is very good, and then when it comes to subwoofers it goes down hill.

I realise that testing subs is a very subjective thing, and that not all subwoofers work as well in the same situations, but it is the lack of testing that goes on that disturbs me. Subwoofers are a huge slice of the market, with a vast number of manufacturers invloved, and yet the same suspects get reviewed every time, namely REL, Vibe and occasionally M&K.:thumbsdow

How do we change this? Is it a case of writing to the editors and demanding that they review more products, or do we (as sub owners) have to offer our own subs up for review?

I too am a subscriber-I'm sure you will have noticed Rel's and other firms advertisements for Rel in HCC-month after month after> and Vibe come to that.

I disagreeand think that they are one of the least subjective things to test in the AV chain.

Incidentally I notice that whilst handing out medals to REL, B&W and Vibe, HCC actually use M&K subwoofers in their own room.

    Hi all
I think myself that buying a sub is a very personal thing.
Ive demoed vibe subs and found them too over powering they are like car subs thud thud thud. The rel q150e i owned one of these it intergrated very well with my system very easy to set up,but i found it to be lacking in depth and power especially with movies,I now own a B&Wasw675 this sub is ideal for me its compact does the biz with music and movies and iam happy with my choice. The cht 15 and pardigm servo15 are excellent subs but not very waf friendly. if i could have my choice these would be the subs i would go for. What we ought to do was have a list of good performing waf subs then another for people were size doesnt matter it might take some of the confusion out of sub buying as you cant take everything as gospel what the mags print and i think most of the lads and lasses on this forum are more trustworthy and honest about kit that they own or have owned
    imo.

Nice to hear from a Q150E user, your post is the most damning yet of HCC's sub know-how, is it a clear margin in quality between the ASW675 and the Q150E gonzo?

Wasn't it a Q150 that Juboy got rid of to replace with a much cheaper Velodyne

the servo was well reviewed a few years ago in what hi-fi but because it is actually a pretty old model and its original price was £800 in RS it was never in £500 group tests (they never take street price into consideration). also they only review new models as im sure if they compared say the rel q100 (used to own),rel q150 and paradigm servo 15 (now own) the q150 would come last by a fair bit.

    My two pennies worth...

Vibe actually make more car subwoofers than HC subs so maybe they follow the (wrong) idea that what works for one, will work for another?

As far as Velodyne goes, as they are rather specialist from the US and there is only a handful of dealers in the uk, they just wouldn't bother demo-ing them?
I dunno, maybe eric could get a petition together which we all put our names to, so they that they know enough people want their opinion about them....?

At the end of the day I think that it's the advertisers in the mags who have the most clout when it comes to deciding what gets put forward for demo and what doesn't.

If you read my post again you'll se it was directed at gonzo who clearly states "q150e" in his post.

Beg for forgiveness you spawn of a turtle

Ive seen a review on a Q150 that had a completely different driver in it than the usual Audax one, It got 5 stars anyway, but the reviewer commented on it NOT BEING THE FASTEST SUB AVAILABLE. Is Rel putting drivers in review models to suit the reviewer?

I will look for the review and tell you all when I find it, but i'm sure someone out there has already noticed.

Blimey Apocalypse that magazine only got of the press on Wednesday???

I got a copy from a few years ago and considering how fast this stuff changes, some of that stuff was still picked out them.

    Hi apocalypse
Yes the B&W asw675 is in my opinion a much better sub more depth in movies and more punch with music.I should just mention that the asw675 does take longer to intergrate with the speakers ,positioning and more fine tuning but is well worth it when finished imo.
