RIght guys my laptop has given up the ghost....new one required, now about 12 months ago i saw a Toshiba demo home entertainment laptop, as i dont need the lpatop for running things like Matlab, Multisim and VB editors anymore its purely for entertainment so i think i want something widescreen DVD writer (super drive?) fast enough to decode HD clips if possible idealy a docking station option ( so i can hook it into the HC system) and perhaps remote control (can use bluetooth via phone)
I need alappy as i work away alot (well supposed to) so want soemthing i can take with me to watch films etc...

also want built in WiFi preferably bluetooth TV card and decent video out (not just S-video)

previously i have had 2 Acer's one lasted 2 years the last one 3 years IIRC both cooked themselves......My GF has a WS acer Aspire which i am usig ATM but we both use them and need 2 really so what do you guys reconmend for £600-£1000?
i like the look of the Qosmio G20-156 anyone got one? what are they like? £1300 is the price i have seen so its top top end budget wise and does it have a dock? I wont be buying until april (big job security issues) but if all goes well i will need one soon after

If you can wait a little longer you might be better off. Toshiba are releasing the Qosimo G30 next month, which will be very expensive but you should see some good deals on the G20 i would of thought. The G30 looks the business though, HD-DVD, 17" 1080p, HDMI out etc etc, pretty much everything you would want in a HC laptop, except the price. http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news.php?newsId=2716
The Tosh Satellite P100 is also out very soon, which could be an alternative. About a grand cheaper than the G30 but no HD-DVD, 17" 1440x900 and a DVI-D out instead of HDMI. They are advertising the fact the DVI port is great for viewing HD content on an external monitor etc, but no mention of HDCP.

well not looking to buy for a month or so going on holiday end of the month which is going to dent the funds somewhat! I would like a dock to stick in the old AV rack (need to buy a bigger rack or make space first to use iit with the plasma having to hook up multiple cables everytime is going to be a real pain in the ass....
apart from the dock this looks great on paper! http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe....DUCT_ID=113321&DISC_MODEL=0&toshibaShop=false

    Hi,
I've got a Dell XPS Generation 2 with Pentium 2.26 Mobile chip - it runs WMV HD clips without any probs really smoothly, has a Nvidia 256mb 6800 GeForce GO Graphics card, DVI output and vga, DVD Re-writer, loads of inputs 6 USB, WI-FI, Bluetooth etc etc and a 1980 by 1280 17" widescreen.....

    Very pleased with mine...

    Old link no longer working.

There are 'rumours' of a dual core version of this pc appearing. That would be very interesting.

When I bought this I looked long and hard at ll the laptops available for a long time.

I'm normally a Dell fan especially with the 9300 range.

Also worth checking out are the latest 'big rigs' from Rockdirect, Evesham and Savrow. Very good and more powerful graphics wise. But a bit pricey.

But the HP did it all and didn't scrimp on the graphics.

Yes you can buy better, but at what price?

Every other Dell I've ever seen has a docking station connector, I'm fairly sure the XPS will too......
if not, the Dell Precision M70 is identical spec (though 15" WUXGA screen), and definitely works with their D-Port docking station.

Cheers dude i would like WS makes external connection alot easier to a WS plasma, neatness is the main thing "if only DELL sold in the shops" I am not keen on spending so much without seeing one in the flesh the performance of the screen is critical......the Inspiron 9400 is looking good, what does the XPS offer for almost double the price? also noticed the inspiron 6400 smaller screen but a lot lighter. Hmm decisions decisions

Nice looking machine no dock option tho which i think will be the killer......

Hmm just specced a 9400 (not seriously either...) £1269 and the dock options are as follows
I want a drop on dock these look like generic docks or are the kensington ones drop on?

just built a Insp. 6400 today as it happens..

The 1680 x 1050 screen is pretty good really, don't have any HD to test with, but with normal DVDs it looks OK.

Did a lattitude 810 last week, and in all-round windows use that looked far better. (Same screen I think, better graphics adapter)
I'll try spec another this week for some lucky punter, to test with some DVDs

The M70 will almost certainly be the same screen as the Lat 810, don't know anything about the XPS hardware but will try find out tomo for you.

you can pick up a top-end D810 for £1277, another £70? for the docking station.... that's what I'd be spending my £'s on if I was shopping for a new lappy.

Lattitude D610 & D810 are VERY good for the money.... just a tad 'ugly' looking..

In the last 5 years I've always tended to try only work at places that run Dell kit, it makes life so much easier when you know all the little HW nasties that lie in wait...

These days I'm getting my own PC installation/support business off the ground, and again try (very very incredibly hard) to always get customers buying direct from Dell whenever they need anything new..

I'm a BIG Dell fan basically, their Lattitude laptops and Optiplex PCs just don't ever go wrong it seems... which is very good news for a guy who gets paid to (not) fix them ;)

    - Maplins? the holiday camp?
(think you've got me mixed up with somebody else on that one)

    :D

Yea, same price the other article suggested. Its the first HD-DVD model (iirc) so they would be daft not to try and stiff people for it.

Horny, I'm no laptop expert but last year I had to replace my Sony Vaio and went for another Viao as I'm used to the way it works. The guys at Micro Anvika where I bought it told me I was mad as "Toshiba beats the pants off everything else".

Why is a dock so important?

There are so many good laptops you're mising out on by limiting the choice with a dock.

Fujitsu lifebooks do docking stations, even with both VGA and DVI outputs which you may like for an HDMI connection.....

And Lenovo which are basically IBM Thinkpads even before IBM sold the brand do the docking station thing as well....

The only thing I've never seen on a docking station is a digital audio connector...I'm sure it is around, but I haven't seen it yet....
