I think if I had the drive and commitment I would. A thermoefficent house such as this

    www.channel4.com/4homes/ontv/grand-designs/houses/S/suffolk_eco_house-2.html

really rather appeals. A design of ones choice with low running costs has top be a:thumbsup: Old character homes are all very well but they are money pits:thumbsdow The only thing really is to get hold of building land at an affordable price then the requisite tradesmen and all the fittings etc. Can work out expensive though:(

I really like those Huf houses - prefabs with a difference. I am trying to get planning permission to convert a 16th century waggon barn on my property and it is proving to be the most frustrating experience of my life - I have had to have bat surveys, owl surveys and they have bounced the architect's plans three times now. I almost feel like knocking the thing down and selling the stone to a reclaimer.

Maybe the qualification you are missing is arson... Oh no it's burned down, I will have to build something new on it... what a terrible shame. I'll just use this insurance money...

Even though I'm only 18, I've always wanted to build my own house. I know I will someday and I look forward to it.

The huf seems overly open , but very beautiful. Yes i think to build your own if you can afford it is the way to go, you get all the plusses and none of the negs. I have seen some some fantastic houses with beautiful designs in and out.:smashin:

My wife is from Jelenia Gora in Poland which is up in the mountains close and quite close to both Prague and Dresden. This means that it is easy to get there, the property is cheap and the mountains are great, plus we have a whole bunch of friends that live in the area.

I have found that most Polish people either understand a lot of English or speak rudimentary English. Most of my friends over there have from a basic to a very good command of the language. My Polish is rudimentary to say the least.

Having said all that though, I find that one can muddle along and have a great time with very basic common language skills on either side. All that I am hoping is that my Polish will improve as I spend more time across there.

Aye, it is going to be needed, they have amazing vodka out there.:D

Saying that though I was shocked by the price of the house. The design I am looking at, the first quotes for the frame of the place started to come in at about £13 000. Seems very cheap to me.

My wife was looking into it a little while back.

There is a quality UK firm that use oak throughout the construction and the finished article is very nice indeed.

The frame for one of their houses was actually used on the C4 series. It was where a young couple built their new home in the middle of a village green or the likes. Her dad and family helped build it.

It looked fantastic and the price even today is very good.

Only the cost of land boosts costs.

One of the most interesting things about building a new house is that no VAT is payable. Unfortunately this doesn't apply to conversions. I am in the process of converting a beautifully situated but surpassingly ugly bungalow in Norfolk to something worthy of the location. But it would have been cheaper (and faster) to knock it down and start again.
