A very confusing and off-putting subject for potential buyers, have you ever been affected by screen burn?

Precautions: Below 50% contrast/brightness and Dynamic or similar OFF
No precautions: Dynamic or similar ON and High Contrast/Brightness

edit: post your plasma make/model as well if you want :)

Dad's Panasonic TH42-PW4 in the bar showing mainly football, contrast and brightness have been at 50% throughout its life, and not a hint of retention or burn. :)

Panasonic TH-42-PA50E, bought end July-05. Currently in run-in mode (contrast/brightness at 50% in cinema mode).

Sometimes I use calibrated (with DVE) contrast/brightness settings to view some DVDs (films or my camcorder home videos) - average 1 DVD per week.

Plasma usage: around 3-4 hours per day (working days), 8 hours per day (week-end).

    No image retention !

Note: My personal usage of my plasma is not a recomendation to others. It is just a description of what I do!

I'm the 1st to report image retention, I nearly fried a MXE 50. My work colleagues left a DVD on in the shop and went to the pub on a saturday, forgot to turn it off. SW AOTC menu retained on screen for approx 2 weeks. That was after being on the screen for about 36 hours.

    Looks encouraging, IMO

Badger's right, I'd not have bothered to say I'd had no problems, as I have a new plasma at home every year anyway.... Mine was exceptional, and the abuse was extreme. Don't buy an ex-demo MXE50 from Visionary is my suggestion! Not a general recommendation, nice people otherwise.

I have read the manual that has come with my Hitachi PD6600 and it suggest that it has picture rotation as screen saver also it has a pixel cleaning system that takes one hour to wipe any image retention???? Call me blond is that and good?????? Also it suggests when using games consoles to change the rotation setting from 30 mins to 5 mins????

My 42PWD7BK had done just under 200 hours on cinema mode with brightness and contrast at 50% and no problem whatsoever yet (touches wood).
It might be handy to log the plasma models that screen burn/image retention has been a problem on, could help buyers decide on what to go for.

:lesson: Now i just want to state that im more than happy with my panny 42pv500 and at no time have i ever regreted buying this heavenly display as i know a lot of people have negative veiws on the pannys.Right here goes, everytime i watch a channel with logos in either the top left or right hand corners for more than an hour i get image retention. The main culprits seem to be the white logos like the discovery and sky sports,if i watch these channels for an hour or more then turn the channel over the image of the logo appears for an hour or so after before fading and dissapearing. Now i dont see this as an issue as they always dissapear so it really does'nt concern me.I have had my panny for 3mth now and it is well past the 200hrs run in and the contrast and brightness are under 50% so these are'nt issues.I would also like to state that i can have say the disney channel on with the logo at the bottom of the screen for ages and image retention never occurs it always seems to be at the top of the screen.I must say that this is just my experience with my plasma and nobody elses i love my panny the satifaction it gives me throughout easily outweighs any little problems that occur. No display is without its faults and if i could go back 3mth now i would still choose the panny as its a complete joy to watch

It's a very good feature, IMO.
I have mine set to 5 mins all the time.
As you can't notice it happening, I can't see why wouldn't want it to do it as often as possible.
My 7200 has screen wipe (pixel cleaning).
Don't take the 1 hour as gospel (it may not work at all) and definitely don't use it unless you have to (it ages the panel).
Use sensible settings, follow the precautions that are posted in lots of threads and unless you're extremely unlucky, you won't have a problem :smashin:

i have permanent screen burn on my hitachi 7200 plasma from children tv logo and it is only 2 months old. Left it at default settings from when john lewis installed it and only found out too late about running them in. No one told me.So it does still happen and if you think i had a channel on for more than 1-2 hours at a time then you would be wrong.

Yep have to say I got image retention on my 42PV500 when watching England and then Scotland on Sky Sports 1 (4 - 5 hrs) but it went away after I unplugged it for a while. This was after running it in with all picture settings below 50 % (still are)for over 300 hours, Haven't noticed any problems with any other logo so it does seem to be more apparent with white logos as crank mentioned.

assuming you voted, and considering you didnt change the settings (im guessing dynamic and high contrast etc.), should you not of voted for:

how many hours since it happened? have you tried the hitachi's wipe feature?

tried screen wipe over night on advice from hitachi. Been in for a 24 hr primary colour blasting in the repair shop and now been told i would have to pay over 1 grand to have the screen replaced. Had it on normal contrast.

    Hi All,

I suffered image retention on my 42pv500 for the first time this weekend. I took all the precautions for running it in, and since then tweaking the picture has left the contrast well below 50% and the brightness at around 40-45% - all viewing is done in cinema mode which I set it to from day 1.

My image retention was caused by leaving the sky sports news channel on this past Saturday for about 3-4 hours, and when I changed over I could clearly see the retention of the graphics from the right hand side. This disappeared by late Sunday morning and I breathed a sigh of relief.

This evening however I had eurosport2 on for approx 1/2hr and when I changed channel I could see the eurosport logo on the top right....it went after about an hour or so but I'm completely paranoid about ruining my display now, having had retention in what seems to be the same place twice within a matter of days. What worse is I love watching Motogp and now doubt I can watch a whole programme of it ever again...

As far as I know I took all the correct precautions...feeling completely gutted as I type this as the set is superb overall. Be keen to hear anyones thoughts/comments...

    Cheers,
    Mark.

i think the pv500s look pretty burn proof tbh

could you zoom the moto gp to get rid of the logo? i guess eurosport is 4:3 anyway?
