Well it looks like blu ray is going to have DD as the main sound format . If I understand correctly , this means that you will not be able to just plug your DVD into your TV and watch. After the massive success that DVD was , you would have thought that they would follow its lead. Make it so everyone could use it (with or without a full AV set up) .I realise its more of a specialist product ,but they seem to be cutting out a massive portion of the market

Ofcourse , if I've misunderstood .Mods can close at the first op

Isn't DD a mandatory sound format in current DVDs ? It's just that all DVD players can decode it and down-mix it to stereo or mono and hence plug straight into the TV. Would HD-DVD / Blu-ray be any different ?

All you need to watch DVD at the moment is Tv ,DVD player & scart lead . But with bluray an AV set up is reqired ,so you cut everyone out of the market who hasnt got one? I don't think it will be as successful as they hope . Better to make it compatable for everyone , with the option for those to use its hi def capabilities that can

Where have you heard this from ? This would mean that the players would have no onboard sound processing and would only have a digital audio out.

The article onlys says DD+ will be compatible with existing A/V recievers, not that you need one to listen to it. Provided the players have some in built sound decoding, as all current DVD players do, I don't see why you couldn't just plug them into your TV with a Scart or seperate audio video leads.
