Has anyone taken the back of a BK XLS200?

I have an intermittent fault with my BK XLS200?

Every now and then it will rumble loudly when switched on. It is not the source, when I disconnect it there is no difference. Also the gain control makes no difference.

To ‘fix’ I switch on and off until it stops. The sub then works fine until the next occurance which might be in a few hours or a few days, there is no pattern. Sometimes a single off-on cycle will do the job, sometimes it takes more, as many as ten in the worst case.

My suspicion is that the electrolytic capacitors are failing with age - I’m half expecting to find them bulging and/or leaking.

That is if I could get at them.

The back plate has 12 hex-socket head screws - I have removed them but the back plate doesn’t budge to gentle force - I don’t want to try brute force in case there is anything else I should remove.

The only other possible fixings that I can see are three screws in the heatsink but not touched those in case they are just securing MOSFETs on the other side.

Anyone removed the back of one of these - is it just those 12 screws and pull hard or is there something else to do.

I eMailed BK months ago for advice but they never replied.

Cheers,

Nigel

Capacitors as I was expecting, but it doesn’t answer my question - which is how do you get the back panel off.

The only help it does give is that it shows the back panel off and the heatsink is still connected - so that suggests that it is just the 12 screws that need removing.

Problem with my sub is that with those 12 screws removed the panel panel won’t budge. Not sue whether it is another fixing that I have missed or the panel is also stuck down.

It tells you that the amp is secured by the first set of screws and held in place by double sided foam so needs a bit of force to pry it loose.....

Thanks, missed that bit.

Just found a video too, the guy uses a Neutrik plug to lever the back off.

Correct and BK advise waving a heat gun or hairdryer round the mounting plate to soften the adhesive. It works having removed an amp from a Monolith twice.

Thanks, I’ll try that too.

Well just tried that and still can’t budge it a millimetre.

The obstacle, I think, is the bloody great heatsink attached to the metal backplate. With a really decent hairdryer on full, no sooner have I heated up part of the plate it cools down with no sign of warmth to the touch.

Looks like I’m going to have to use a brute force approach.

How long did you apply the hairdryer for? it can take up to ten minutes for the reason you stated, having to constantly move the hairdryer around. I found that while using the hairdryer give a pull on the Neutrik plug every few minutes and eventually it will just come out as if it had never been glued in at all.

That was the second time I removed the amp, the first time it was winter so put the sub in front of a heating vent and had a cup of tea and a biscuit while waiting. (I said tea.)

I just dug out the advice from Tom at BK in an email:-
In the video the amplifier panel comes out quite easily, there are times when the gasket tape sticks the panel in fast and you may need to wave a hairdryer over the amplifier panel for 10 to 15 minutes to heat it up.

Thanks will give that a go - will have to wait until the weekend as I am away with work.

Also, rather annoyingly, I can't find my Neutrik lead. It has been sat in a cupboard unused for nearly 10 years taking up space. Went to get it yesterday and it it not there and the cupboard is looking much less cluttered. Have a horrible feeling that I binned it on the basis of never needing it for 10 years, probably never will.

Cheers,

Nigel
