Harsh sounding record deck

Hullo!

I currently have a cheap deck which I can't afford to upgrade. The plinth is of super thin plastic. When I play say, Captain Beefheart, most of it sounds fantastic but there's distortion when he shouts, same with Van Morrison on Astral Weeks. I thought it might be the cart. mis-tracking but the drums, guitar &c all sound fine. In fact the trumpets on my jazz records sound fine too, and these are usually quite acerbic. Distortion only seems to occur with voices strenuously applied. Does anyone know a) what the problem might be and b) a way to (cheaply) remedy it?

Cheers,

Will.

Hello,

A couple of questions. 1. What make is your record deck. 2. What cartridge and arm are you using. 3. What sort of amp and spks are you also using?

U must try and be more specific.

Hi,

My set up iss: an Acoustic Solutions deck with generic arm and Audio Technica cart.; Michell record clamp; Cambridge Audio phono pre and intergrated amp; Gale speakers; Castle speaker stands; Chord 'silver' speaker cable; some Russ Andrews stuff (ref. PowerKord to amp., Yellow PK to the deck, oak cone feet); QED 2 interconnects.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Will.
