hi....just got my harmony one today....if i shake it (not vigorously) it rattles like something is loose inside...is this the norm....i emailed logitech and this is there reply:

    Dear andrew,

Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote

The rattle that you hear in the harmony remote is the tilt sensor for the remote. The tilt sensor is to turn on the backlight and the glow for your remote when you pick it up. If you have anymore questions or difficulties please let us know so we can better assist you.

We hope that we were able to assist you in resolving this issue, however if you are still experiencing any difficulties with your Harmony Remote, please feel free to contact us again.

    Regards,

    Harmony Technical Support

    ........cheers andrew

Yes, it is indeed the tilt switch

Old tilt switches used Mercury, so no noise but they are not allowed to use that Element these days due to it's toxicity - I think they use a small ball-bearing instead, hence the rattle

I was about to email Amazon/Logitec and complain that something was loose in mine!

Thanks for the post. Saves me a bit of embarrassment!

Whilst I understand the explanation that mercury's bad, I'm sure there must still be better technologies than a ball bearing - there are tilt sensors in the Playstation 3's Sixaxis controller, for instance, and in the Wiimote. My phone has a sensor, you can change track by shaking it. The mighty iPhone / iPod Touch have very good movement sensors, proving that it can't be a very big component to fit in such slim devices. None of these devices use a ball bearing or rattle when used, and I don't imagine any of them are using mercury unless anyone knows better - the kiddie-friendly Wiimote in particular. Certainly they are all current devices on the market right now, so are all "allowed" to use whatever silent tilt-sensors they are using. What technologies are they using, and why couldn't the Harmony remote use the same?

I don't know why not, but I do know that I've never heard anything at all out of my One!

Thanks for that info, saves me a return trip. Just got one and set it up and only noticed the rattle. Remote works fine but it was a bit disconcerting to hear that rattle like something inside had broken.

I can't believe this is the best they can figure out for this, or at least they can't figure out a way to make it not rattle around... I was about to return my Harmony One as well until I (thankfully) googled harmony one rattle... so there you go, I don't like rattling stuff in my remote but over all still pretty happy so far.

It may be a quick fix so they could keep shipping, to be honest I am surprised they still used mercury.
It looks like I have one with the mercury tilt switch BTW, about a year old.

So they've changed from a tilt switch to this rattling thing?
