If you can live with its Aesthetics (and frankly - I can't) it's definitely worth the outlay. Outperforms the Philips 963SA I'd say - but loses out on SACD omission and lack-lustre CD replay.

Picture's a treat for the eyes though.

I've got one and the picture quality is very good. I did a back to back comparison with the Arcam 88+ and I found the DVD25 came very close but it's less the half the price! Until I got a dedicated CD player, I used it with my Pioneer 2011 and used the DACS in that with good results.

And the looks kind of grow on you after a while! (But I don't think I could ever live with a HK Amp!)

You do notice the layer change, but I have not seen a player that overcomes this yet, is there such a thing?

My denon has a 2MB buffer to combat layer-change pausing.

So yes, the player (amongst others) is the DVD2800MKII.

Although in all honesty I won't lose sleep over whether or not my player pauses for layer changing.

Horray! Someone else who thinks that a 0.5 sec flicker on the screen during a 2 hour film isn't the end of the world!! Get over it guys. If you just can't survive the layer change pause, Blockbusters still rent the latest films on VHS. :D

Oh and they other day at a local dealer in Watford I saw the new 'silver' DVD25, which is a bit nicer looking than the normal DVD25.

And I can also agree with the layer change issue, never really thought about it until I read this thread.... I rember the bad old days of flipper disks so a pause is nothing really to worry about.

I know the question was about the DVD25 but you do know that the DVD30 has just been released which includes DVD-A. The dealer I was talking to said that both the DVD & CD quality has improved, and it still plays MP3s and JPGs.

I was quoted £450 (£100 more than the DVD25) by Infidelity in Kingston, Surrey, UK. Tel 0208 943 3530

It depends on how layer change is done on a disc - if it is incorporated well into a fade or some or transition it's not too bad, but some movies do the layer change while there is a fair bit going on.

Also does anyone know about any issues with the likes of Chroma bug and also whether it is available multi region (hack or chip needed?)?

In all honesty I really don't care about layer changes - it's a very small 'nitch' in the otherwise perfect DVD format.

As was said earlier in the thread - if you don't like it go back to VHS.

There is a set of button presses on the 25 handset to enable multiregion. There is also a disk that enable it and PAL progressive. The 30 come with PAL / NTSC progressive out of the box and there is a setup menu option to enable multiregoin.

Hmm, a quick Google search shows it widely available in Germany for 400 Euro. Should be £250 or so here...

You can get the HK DVD25 for £300 if you look around. Even Sevenoaks do it for £350.

Great machine the pal progressive on a plasma is out of this world... A bit too much sometimes as it shows some of the flaws in original dvd..
