Have just been offered the avr 630 for an amazing price, any good with B&W 603's? any down sides to the amp, any reason at all I should not snap up this amazing offer????

Also for the list price of a receiver at £999 I would hope it was as good with music as it is with movies , please tell me this is the case :)

The 630 is a very good amp, excellent for both movies and music and has plenty of power. Don't be put off by the quoted power output figures. Later units should come with Dolby PLIIx installed but you can download this as an upgrade from the Harman Kardon Website.

Drawbacks. It's due to be replaced by the 635 model which is out in the USA already. This has a very good Room EQ system, better processing and also has full blown Logic7 which can be applied to Dolby/DTS 5.1. The Logic7 processing on the current 630 can only be applied to 2ch Stereo sources. The 630 (pre PLIIx upgrade) also had an annoying habit of locking onto a digital signal, dropping out and then relocking on a few seconds later. This is most noticeable at the start of DVD's when logos etc appear. Once the film is going, there's no problem.

Only other minor niggle is no subwoofer test tone and that you have to set each mode's Channel Levels individually. Would have been a lot easier just to set one Master Channel Level rather than have to do it for each mode. Annoyingly you can only adjust Dolby and DTS when these sources are being played.

Apart from that, it's a very good amp. :)
