Harman Kardon HKTS 9 5.1 speakers....any good with Yamaha RXV467?

Hi,

I am currently looking for a 5.1 surround sound setup for my lounge at home. I have around £450 for receiver and speakers (plus a bit more for cables).

I originally had designs on a Onkyo TXSR508 which I was planning to pair with either Jamo A102 HCS5, Canton Movie 80CX or Tannoy SFX5.1 speakers.

However, I have seen the following for £450 - Yamaha RXV467 and Harman Kardon HKTS 9 in Curry's. To buy separately, the receiver is listed at £270 and the speakers at £330. Is this a good deal, and is it a better combination that either of the above?

Also, I have attached a picture of my lounge and marked where I would have my speakers - would this be an acceptable setup, or would the large open space affect the sound in any way? The red crosses show where we sit when watching films and all speakers would be at approx. head height.

Sorry for all the questions - This is my first foray into home cinema and I want to make sure I'm spending my cash in a worthwhile way!! So any feedback on the above would be greatly received.

Thanks,
Neil

Ok!
I have just received my set.Long have I been reading on the net what is it ..which one ?I have the yamaha rx-v667 now which after thorough research is now paired with a set of Harman Kardon HKTS 30bq
And I have to say :( my previous broken panasonic all in one home cinema system (200pounds)probably sounded BETTER!!
Yep!Harman Kardon does not deserve its fame (they love it in spain)and now I can understand why I couldnt find much info on it on the net .It has a 200w active sub and no hole in it that lets the bass come out of it man.Or I dont know why but it doesnt give much at all and It is not in tune with its satellites..the set up is in a 25sqm room. And I am sure it is not the receiver`s fault.:)My rating is a DONT BUY!
you`re velcome..

I tried these out in Currys yesterday with the Toy Story 3 blu-ray and a Yamaha 467 (I have the 667, so this was the closest).

Despite the limitations of their massive demo area (which is enclosed on 3 sides, but open at the back) I thought they sounded great and I am seriously contemplating purchasing some.

I thought they sounded better than the Kef 1005.2s and the Jamo A102 HCS6s, but weren't quite as good as the Kef 2005.3s (which you wouldn't expect them to be given the massive price difference).

True..To be fair I should add some to the above.I have the set now for a while and it can sound good all right.Comparing them with the same "stylish"speakers this one should shine ..There were a couple of more posts here before about this and I was comparing the H.K.speakers to ones like Qacustics which is not fair because they are bigger and of course they sound better...So as I said if someone wants great sound for everything not only movies but music as well and live in a house like me (not a flat)then maybe consider some bigger speakers as these ones do have limitations. For movies however it is great and music as well if you dont want to turn the volume up...

Was this the Curry's in Merry Hill? I ended up buying them from there (with the 467) a few weeks ago and I have to say I have been very impressed with them at home.

A great buy and reckon I got them at a good price.

No, it was the revamped former PC World store on Tottenham Court Road in London. I saw them again today in the Staples Corner branch. Again, far better than the Jamos, not quite as good as the KEF 2005.3s i.e. very competitive at the price.

Plan to audition the Boston Acoustics XS 5.1s against the KEFs to see how they stack up. Reckon the HKs will probably win out though - don't see how the tiny centre speaker of the Bostons can compete, but everyone does seem to love them.
