    Hi!

I am looking for a new receiver. I was looking at the new HK serie. When I look at the new models DPR 1005/2005 they look very small compared to the AVR630. HK always made these beautifull huge receiver, but this model is very small to HK standards. HK is soon launching the AVR7300 and this one looks like a real HK to me, it is huge :) But is is also more expensive than the other models, but hey, it is their top model. I think this model will be above my budget.

Even the AVR630 is bigger than the DPR 1/2005, does the size tell something about the quality of the components inside the receiver, for example its power supply? I know that the DPR 1/2005 have more power output, more features, but are they better, they look so small?

I believe the DPR stands for Digital Path Receiver, and in that name is the reason the amp is smaller. Its digital from the spdif in, right through to the amplification stage of hte receiver. Digital amps are far more efficient than standard analogue designs, putting a much larger percentage of the power into the speakers rather than into their heatsinks.

Because they are so much more efficient they can have smaller power supplies and smaller heatsinks, which are what take up the majority of the room in a receiver, hence they can be made much smaller than their analogue amplified equivalents.

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for your great explanation. Things are a lot more clearer now.

I have also been looking at the same amps and have decided to wait for the AVR7300 before making a decision.

    1. Does anyone know when it will be available in the UK?
    2. Has anyone read a review of the AVR630 yet? The amp has been available for ages but no magazine seems to have reviewed it yet.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Thanks for your input, but could you please give some more info? I can't do anything with this answer.

Well, according to the Dutch distributor, I have to wait till the autumn fo the avr7300 to arrive. The DPR serie should be available during summer, but I already found some shops here that sell it.

Can't afford it! Cheapest price I've seen in europe is 1499euro. I don't think it's justified. Am probably getting the 430 once the pliix and dropout issue is fixed and ships. Me do an upgrade via rs232 - I'd have to buy a cable!

However, the real benefit of digital amps is you just don't have the same heat issues that have plagued av amps. See no fan! The price will come down once these kind of amps takeover.
