I've recently been demo'ing a number of AVRs in the £400-£800 price range.
If anyone is thinking of buying one I recommend that you take a listen to Harman Kardon. To my mind the AVR 5000 (now being superceded by 5500) is much better than Denon 3802 for audio. Not mushy like the Denon, with what the salesman described as an 'American' sound.
Even the new 5500 is cheaper than the Denon 3802 at about £750.

I think HK have been out of the picture a bit in the UK for the last couple of years but they are now coming back. There seem to be fewer HiFi shops selling their kit but it could be worth the effort

Got some nifty features the Harman Kardon range - namely EzySet which balances all the channels for you via a microphone in the remote and Logic7 (five channel version) pinched from high end Lexicon processors.

    No slouches for music either.

congratulations on actually demoing an HK - most people just go for the Denon, I compared the Denon in stereo to the HK and the HK was far better. Considering it's £200 cheaper is quite something.

Ok so the sterio sound is better. What about DD or DTS sound, any comments

Is it fair to compare the HK with the 3802. The HK is a non EX ES amp.

It's fair to compare any amps that are in the same price range.

EX and ES may be the latest "thing" but is not suitable for many people due to the layout of their rooms and lack of WAF of yet more speakers.

Ah but they arn't in the same price rance.

I am sure the Marantz is £450 and the Denon £700?

I demo'ed the HK AVR500 against a Denon. I think it was a 3300 (or something similar. Cant recall as it was 2/3 years ago).

I found the HK just pipped the Denon although both were fine and to be honest there just wasnt much in it and i would have been happy with either.

I know these models are not what you would get today but i dont think there is much in it between Denon and HK when looking at their similar spec units.

I've recently upgraded to the HK 5500 and DVD25 and can certainly recommend them. The 5500 is superb in AV and very great musically. Has abot everything you can want and Logic 7 processing also blows PL 2 away.
The DVD 25 again is great musically and has stunning picture quality.
