Wide Screen Signalling (WSS) on line 23 controls the aspect ratio selection (16:9 or 4:3, and in theory 14:9) of a programme being transmitted, and thus sets pin 8 of scart.

Is this information also stored in a Sky+ recording? (Perhaps could be rephrased to, does Sky+ record 576 or 625 lines?)

Sky+ records the bitstream, so if wss on line 23 is present on the transmission, it will be there with the recording.
