I have bought a 80GB hardrive to store my IPOD tunes on.
Do I need to change any settings to let the IPOD know the new location of the songs? I had problems previously with shifting program files.
Or will it automatically detect the new folder locations?

    Appreciate any help.

You will need to ensure that the software that you use to synch, iTunes etc, knows where the folders are that you store your music files in.
You can usually do that from an Options menu.
Just create a suitably named folder on your new hard drive and ensure that the software is defaulting to storing music in there. iTunes etc will create a new folder nested in the default folder for each CD you rip.
